Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has amassed a lot of hatred from fans, players and some media experts through his on-ice antics. He though is a “really good guy” as per former team captain Patrice Bergeron.
The duo spent 14 seasons as teammates from 2010-11 to 2022-23. Following Bergeron’s retirement from the league, Marchand was named as the next captain of the Bruins franchise.
Though Brad Marchand is considered one of the greats of this generation, his on-ice behavior has ticked off some people. It has earned him the nickname of “Rat”. Recently, the 36-year-old forward once again came under fire after he removed his glove and choked Ottawa Senators star Nick Cousins with his bare hand.
Bergeron recently took part in the inaugural episode of the “The Energy Line with Nate and JSB” podcast of former NHL star Nate Thompson and broadcaster Julie Stewart-Binks. In this, he defended his former teammate and pointed out that his leadership skills in the locker room.
What would surprise a lot of people is he is a really good guy. A lot of people have a lot of hatred towards him… but if you take it back and really get to know him as a person, you see in the locker room, the leadership and the connections that he has with the guys… He’s a special guy to be around.

The Bruins have not had a good season so far. After a disappointing start they sacked their head coach Jim Montgomery.
Marchand himself is having a down season. He has 42 points (19 points and 23 assists) in 55 games with a plus-minus rating of -8 this season. This is the worst of his career.
The Bruins are currently 27-22-6 for the season and are out of the playoff picture. If they are to miss the playoffs, they could trade away their captain on the trade deadline day. All of this has linked him with a move to the Edmonton Oilers now.
