“I apologize…” Patrick Beverley reveals Darvin Ham’s vulnerable moment during shaky Lakers stint

Darvin Ham and Patrick Beverly

Former Milwaukee Bucks star Patrick Beverly made his mark in the NBA through his defensive game. Beverly has established himself as one of the best defenders, known for his pesky defense on guards and wings. Beverly has also gained a reputation for his on and off-court antics and has a history of getting into altercations. The most notable ones came with Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, and DeAndre Ayton.

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired Patrick Beverly during the 2022-23 season for his defensive approach following a disappointing 2021-22 season. Darvin Ham coached Beverly during his time with the team, where Beverly played with great intensity and brought the same energy to the Lakers’ locker room. Recently, on his podcast, Beverly talked about his stint with the Lakers.

Coach Ham come up to me, I don't know his move, I'm just (like), 'What up?' He (said), 'Could I get five minutes?' Oh sh**t, Okay, what up Ham? 'Just want to let you know Pat, I apologize.' You know as a coach, you're never supposed to apologize.

During his time with the Lakers, Beverly had many altercations. Notably, the one in which he pushed DeAndre Ayton for taunting Austin Reaves remains the most popular one. Moreover, he didn’t play for an entire season, as the team traded him to upgrade the squad.

After that, Pat Bev played for the Chicago Bulls and the Milwaukee Bucks. Now, Beverly has finally made one of the biggest decisions of his career and has decided to leave the NBA. The defensive guard is set to play in the Israeli Premier League.

Darvin Ham’s lack of preparation became one of the factors for his firing

During the 2022-23 season, the Los Angeles Lakers appointed Darvin Ham as the new head coach. He was selected after a disappointing season for the Lakers in the 2021-22 season. Ham brought great promise and was expected to make the Lakers a championship contender.

In his first coaching year, Ham managed to coach the Lakers to the Western Conference finals. But they eventually lost to the future champions Denver Nuggets. Last season, the Lakers managed to make the playoffs through the play-in but again lost to the Nuggets in round 1. It was evident that Ham and the Lakers didn’t share the same passion anymore.

One of the reasons for Ham’s departure also was his lack of preparation for the game. Moreover, the team played randomly, according to certain pundits. After the last season, Ham was fired from the position of head coach. The Lakers now have appointed JJ Redick as the new head coach. It will be interesting to see what new Redick brings to the table.
