With seven consecutive AFC Championship games, five Super Bowl appearances, and four consecutive divisional titles over the last seven years, one might wonder if there’s anything that the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes regrets. But, there is indeed one lingering thought that keeps him awake at night.
Heading into a game that potentially claims the title of Greatest of All Time for him, Mahomes reflected on his 3-1 Super Bowl record, where that one loss against Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buaccneers haunts him to date. It was 2020– the year Brady left the franchise where he had spent over two decades and won six Super Bowl rings and joined the Bucs. And, in his debut season, he demonstrated exactly why he is considered the GOAT.
As glorifying as it was for Brady, it was a nightmare for his opponent. While preparing for his third consecutive Super Bowl game, Mahomes was asked if there’s any game that keeps him up at night in his seven-year career and he quickly responded with Super Bowl LV, where the Chiefs were destroyed by Brady’s Tampa Bay at 31-9.
“The Super Bowl versus Tampa. That’s pretty easy,” Mahomes told the reporters.

It was Mahomes’ second Super Bowl appearance, in which he completed 26-of-49 passes for 270 yards with no touchdowns and no interception. Additionally, it was the only loss suffered by the Chiefs in all four of their Super Bowl appearances, and now headed for their fifth.

Even though Super Bowl LV haunts the two-time NFL MVP to date, it hasn’t been able to compromise his sheer confidence in himself as well as his team. While talking to the reporters at the opening night press conference on Monday, Mahomes delivered a powerful message, reflecting his championship mindset and high confidence.
I don’t even think it’s embracing being the villains. We embrace who we are, and we believe we play the game the right way. We believe that we play with a lot of heart and a lot of passion for the game and then we win football games.

His confidence is the key reason he remains unfazed by the ongoing conspiracy theories surrounding the Chiefs, which allege that they have been receiving favorable treatment from the officials. Embracing the role of villain, Mahomes has realized that such perceptions often accompany success.
