The Kansas City Chiefs lost both their top receivers to season-ending injuries within weeks. But before the trade deadline, GM Brett Veach landed DeAndre Hopkins to give Patrick Mahomes a new weapon. Not stopping there, Veach aimed to add even more star talent.

Their defense has been stellar so far, but having the experience of creating Super Bowl teams, Veach and head coach Andy Reid knew they had to get some additional pieces in. They traded for pass rusher Joshua Uche from the New England Patriots to provide some help for Chris Jones.

But even then, the Chiefs decision makers were still not content. They still had time ahead of the trade deadline and wanted to make one last move that would make their defense truly elite. This is what Veach revealed while speaking on the Pat McAfee Show.

We had conversations with New Orleans about Lattimore. But Washington stepped up to the plate with a three and four. That’s a lot, especially as the Chiefs are gonna need those picks next year. We’re gonna be as aggressive as we can but also try to be as responsible as we can.

This revelation throws light on the fact that Brett Veach and his front office colleagues were looking to trade for Marshon Lattimore. The four-time Pro Bowler was on the market as the New Orleans Saints were looking to get hold of some draft picks.

It was a good gamble to try for considering cutting him next year will not impact their dead cap. But they could not match what the Washington Commanders offered, considering they will need those picks in the future.

Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs could three-peat despite offensive struggles

The Kansas City Chiefs might not have succeeded in landing Marshon Lattimore, but even then, their defense is stellar after ten weeks of football. With Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo handling the group, expect them to continue playing outstanding football.

Even their special teams squad is also playing at a high level. The most recent proof was the field goal block that helped them remain unbeaten this season. Leaving the offense as the only question mark with eight games left.

When you hear Patrick Mahomes’ name, it usually means things are under control. But the three-time Super Bowl MVP hasn’t been at his peak this season. Still, his performances suggest that if the Chiefs can navigate the regular season, they’ll be in good shape—because come playoffs, Mahomes is typically in a league of his own.
