Lately, there has been a boatload of buzz surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs but for all the wrong reasons. It seemed to have overshadowed their opening playoff victory against the Houston Texans that advanced them to their seventh consecutive AFC Championship game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, at the center of this controversy, has finally broken his silence to address the situation.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions found themselves in the middle of a huge controversy regarding officiating in their games. Many have alleged that referees favor Kansas City to protect the elite quarterback Mahomes and ensure his advancement to the Super Bowl, citing potential financial benefits for the NFL.

I don’t feel that way. I just try to play football at the end of the day. The referees are doing their best to call the game as fair and as proper as they can.

In the game, the Texans were penalized eight games to four flags called upon the Chiefs. The matter intensified as the Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans and his players expressed their grievance from the officiating after the game, claiming they already knew the referees would be biased towards the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes acknowledges the price of success amid growing criticism

When the Chiefs superstar quarterback won two back-to-back Super Bowl trophies and established the franchise as a dynasty in the league, he realized that success comes at the cost of hatred of many. So, he decided that he wouldn’t mind becoming a ‘villain’ if that’s what it takes to have success. He dismissed the ongoing controversy with the same energy on his appearance on The Drive on 96.5 The Fan.

I’ve kind of learned that no matter what happens during the game, that something’s going to come out about it if you win and you continue to win, so I don’t really pay attention to it.

Two major flags called on the Texans was roughing penalties on defensive end Will Anderson Jr. and linebacker Henry To’oTo’o for hitting Mahomes, which gave Kansas City an advantage to score a field goal and add ten more points on the board. Though both the penalty calls were explained after the game, the Texans were convinced that the officials were biased towards the Chiefs.
