Patrick Mahomes arrived in Lubbock as the guest picker and stayed to shake a leg with Texas Tech Red Raiders wide receiver Caleb Douglas. Few could have predicted that it was the precursor of a BYU beatdown.

The Red Raiders honored their alumni and favorite son by donning the Mahomes-inspired jerseys in a heavyweight showdown against the Cougars from Brigham Young University. Even though BYU arrived with a spotless record, Tech started as the favorite.

The high-scoring offenses of both teams took a backseat as defense dominated the opening ten minutes. Tech held a three-point lead until quarterback Behren Morton orchestrated a 92-yard drive over 12 plays, connecting with Caleb Douglas for a touchdown pass.

Douglas celebrated the score with the iconic ‘Floss‘ dance from Fortnite. Cameras also caught Mahomes trying his best to mimic Douglas, but it’s safe to say that the 2x NFL MVP needs to work on his dancing skills.

While fans celebrated, the referees were busy checking whether Douglas’s foot touched the end zone before going out of bounds. The replay proved that the senior wideout dragged his left toe as soon as he caught the ball. The touchdown stood, and the Red Raiders took a 10-0 lead.

Morton struggled with his pass completions, but he helped orchestrate three successful field goal tries before finding running back Cameron Dickey at the start of the fourth quarter.

True freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier found Chase Roberts for BYU’s first points of the game, which mattered little in the final outcome. Tech kicker Stone Harrington scored his fourth field goal and sealed a 29-7 win for the Red Raiders in front of Patrick and Brittany Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes made a few questionable picks ahead of the BYU-Texas Tech game

Mahomes joined Pat McAfee, Desmond Howard, and Nick Saban at the ESPN College Game Day booth ahead of the BYU-Texas Tech game to announce his favorites for the week 11 fixtures.

Winners aren’t always guaranteed, but Mahomes made a few questionable choices in the day’s fixtures. For instance, he picked Navy to defeat last year’s CFP finalists, Notre Dame. Of course, Navy had won 7 games before playing the Irish, but it still seemed an odd choice. Notre Dame proved far superior, as they blew the Midshipmen away 49-10.

Not to worry for Mahomes’ faithful, he accurately predicted some of the results. Even though he stars for the Kansas City Chiefs, the 30-year-old picked the Texas A&M Aggies to win over the Missouri Tigers.

“Sorry to all my Chiefs Kingdom. A lot of Mizzou there. But I am going to go with the Aggies,” Mahomes said.

The Aggies recorded a 38-17 win against Mizzou and remained undefeated (9-0).

Here is the list of all the picks Patrick Mahomes made:

  • No. 2 Indiana vs. Penn State: No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers (Indiana won 27-24)
  • Navy vs. No. 10 Notre Dame: Navy (Notre Dame won 49-10)
  • No. 9 Oregon vs. No. 20 Iowa: No. 9 Oregon (Oregon won 18-16)
  • Wake Forest vs. No. 14 Virginia: No. 14 Virginia (Wake Forest won 16-9)
  • No. 5 Georgia vs. Mississippi State: No. 5 Georgia (Georgia won 41-21)
  • No. 3 Texas A&M vs. No. 22 Missouri: No. 3 Texas A&M (The Aggies won 38-17)
  • LSU vs. No. 4 Alabama: No. 4 Alabama (Alabama won 20-9)
  • Florida State vs. Clemson: Clemson (Clemson won 24-10)
