The Kansas City Chiefs have gotten off to a bittersweet start this season. Despite being one of the five undefeated teams in the NFL, the reigning Super Bowl champions have not played like their usual selves. Patrick Mahomes is off to a slow start, and the Chiefs’ receiver core is yet to prove their reliability.
But the biggest concern has to be Travis Kelce. The star tight end has struggled and through three games managed to get eight receptions for 69 yards in total. Patrick Mahomes has failed to connect with him on opportunities this season and the quarterback justified the reason for Kelce’s lack of involvement in the team’s offense in his press conference after the win against the Falcons.
The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to get Kelce involved but opposing defenses are making it impossible for him to get free.
Yeah, it's crazy because teams still- the respect factor they have for Travis is just unreal. It's well-deserved, but we're calling a lot of plays for Travis, and it's like two or three people are going to him. So, I mean he understands.Patrick Mahomes said
At this point in his career, Kelce has more than made it clear that he is a threat on offense. This is why the defensive coordinators are attempting to shut him out of the game.
The Chiefs offense is struggling owing to Travis Kelce’s slow start
By preventing Travis Kelce from making his impact felt early on in the game, opposing defenses do not just put the Chiefs at a disadvantage on the field, but it is likely to give them the mental edge over them too.
While this is the scenario, Kansas City has been turning things around by turning this disadvantage into an opportunity for other players to step up and make their impact felt. Does this mean that Travis Kelce will be rendered nothing more than a decoy on the field for the Chiefs this season? No.
The tight end wants to win, and he wants to contribute to his team’s victory.
I think that's the great thing about him is he wants to make an impact on the game, but he wants to win at the end of the day.Patrick Mahomes said
This season has been a surprising one, especially for tight ends. It is not just Kelce who is struggling but all players in that position have got off to a slow start.
Travis Kelce is no stranger to slow starts. Last season, he did not get off to a good start either. In his first three games, he had 17 receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns. This season his numbers are worse, but as the weeks progress, Kelce will hope to turn things around as he recognizes the impact he can have on this offense.
