Ever since the Kansas City Chiefs’ star kicker delivered the controversial speech at a Catholic college graduation, it has attracted tons of backlash for the franchise, not to mention the question about the ideologies the Chiefs locker room shares.

Given the gravity of the situation, Patrick Mahomes finally broke his silence, opposing Harrison Butker’s conservative ideology with a blunt response.

From women’s careers to LGBTQ Pride Month, Butker’s commencement speech touched on every controversial topic of today’s time, except for what really matters to the young graduates—their future.

Upon the intense criticism, the Chiefs quarterback, who is arguably Tom Brady’s successor, was asked to comment on his teammate’s speech at the team’s workout session on Wednesday.

Though Mahomes denied sharing Butker’s ideologies, he defended his teammate’s character, saying he’s leading people in the “right direction.”

I’ve seen the clips... That’s his views. There’s certain things that he said that I don’t necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is and he is trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction. And that might not be the same values as I have, but at the same time, I’m going to judge him by the character that he shows every single day.
Mahomes told the reporters

Mahomes further asserted that there are a lot more people in the NFL with radically different beliefs and ideologies. But he feels compelled to show respect for them, regardless of the difference in opinion.

Harrison Butker’s controversial speech draws attention from all quarters

The three-time Super Bowl champion kicker’s controversial speech has compelled everyone to say something in this regard. From renowned journalists to modern women to fans to even the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, Jonathan Beane,

Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.
Beane wrote in a written statement to PEOPLE magazine

In fact, the Benedictine College where Butker gave the commencement speech has also made its stance clear: the college does not share the NFL player’s beliefs, nor does he represent them in any manner.
