Throughout this past NFL season, the discourse that dominated the league was if the Kansas City Chiefs would be the first team in league history to three-peat. Heading into Super Bowl LIX, many also discussed if Patrick Mahomes would enter the GOAT conversation alongside Tom Brady if he won.
Some were quick to dismiss it as the now FOX broadcaster was the symbol of excellence over his two plus decades in the game. Rising up from a No. 199 draft pick to become the greatest football player to ever walk the earth was a story that cannot be eclipsed by a player his team traded up to draft.
However, some believe that would not stop the Chiefs’ QB as he could wear four Super Bowl rings before turning 30. Had he won Super Bowl MVP, it could have added to the discourse. Then he would have four such MVP awards to go with his two league MVPs.
He also has three All-Pro selections along with his six Pro Bowl calls. Now add the four Super Bowl rings along with the three-peat tag and Patrick Mahomes would now have a resume that would be hard to disregard. But then, fate would not have it that way.
Patrick Mahomes’ disastrous first half
Entering the big game, Mahomes knew he would face the daunting Philadelphia Eagles’ defense. He tried to get the mind games going after arriving at Caesars Superdome wearing a green suit. Then when the game kicked off, it seemed that the green suit antic did not go as planned.

The Eagles’ defense pressured the father of three a lot, so much so that he could not go past seven total plays in the first quarter. Vic Fangio‘s defense forced the Chiefs to punt on their opening three drives as they took a ten-point lead.
Mahomes then went in with eight minutes left on the clock, knowing he has been in this situation before. However, Eagles pass rusher Josh Sweat had other ideas as he sacked the superstar QB twice. On the next drive Mahomes tried to zip it to DeAndre Hopkins, but rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean intercepted it and took it to the house.

Another punt later, Mahomes still had time to recover and win his third straight Super Bowl. With 1:49 on the clock, he threw it down the middle as Eagles defenders collapsed the pocket. But his throw was intercepted by standout linebacker Zack Baun.
The Philadelphia Eagles scored a touchdown on the next drive. That and another punt later, the Kansas City Chiefs went into their locker room scoreless. Then it dawned that he had one of the worst halves of his otherwise stellar NFL career.
The stats that blow Tom Brady comparisons out of the window
His statistics at halftime was 6/14 completed passes for 33 yards. Along with that, he had three sacks and two interceptions, one of which was that pick six. Those statistics are not what befits an elite quarterback who wants to throw his hat into the GOAT race.

To make it worse, those numbers now add up to tally ten touchdowns and seven interceptions in five Super Bowls. Brady had less interceptions in ten trips to the big game. If one were to look at a vis-à-vis comparison after five Super Bowls, it would look like this.
Tom Brady | Patrick Mahomes | |
C/ATT | 127/197 | 128/196 |
Touchdown | 9 | 10 |
Interceptions | 2 | 7 |
Yards | 1277 | 1328 |
It seems on paper they match quite a lot. However, on closer look, one would understand the differences. Brady’s first five Super Bowls were at a time when defenses had a free shot at QBs. The hits were harder, the chops would sting, etc.
Patrick Mahomes is playing in an era when quarterbacks are being protected more than ever. Despite that, to play eerily similarly to Brady has Mahomes already losing the battle. Add the fact that rumors are plenty about how the Chiefs won their last two Super Bowls, and the conversation starts to take shape.
Brady did benefit from favorable officiating. But that was after he went to his fourth Super Bowl and still could not win against the New York Giants, twice.
Patrick Mahomes’ performances cost the Chiefs the three-peat
On the other hand, Patrick Mahomes’ first half was the worst of a quarterback of his standards. That alone pushes him out of the GOAT conversation, at least for now. But another fumble and a total of six sacks was enough to deem his overall performance in Super Bowl LIX as the sole reason the Chiefs lost.

He could not get passes into the hands of his receivers and ran into defenders all game. In fact, the Eagles did not blitz all night, yet he was sacked six times. Only in the final 18 minutes of the game did he start to connect with his teammates. But those accurate completions followed by three touchdowns were a bit too late.
By then the Philadelphia Eagles had racked up a sizeable lead. They remembered that to win, they need to keep the ball out of the Chiefs QB’s hands. They did that with aplomb and limited Mahomes’ time of possession. At the end, the Eagles won Super Bowl LIX with a 40-22 score.
This means Patrick Mahomes loses out on the GOAT conversation as a whole. Tom Brady never had this bad a game in his ten trips to the big game. In fact, he was never the reason his New England Patriots lost three Super Bowls.
But Patrick Mahomes’ performances cost his Kansas City Chiefs a chance at being the first and only team in NFL history to win three-straight championships. Therefore, for him to return to the GOAT conversation, it is going to take five more Super Bowl wins and that too supported by elite performances.
