The days are numbered, and the duels are counted: Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes know exactly how close they are to creating history. As Mahomes and squad walk into Arrowhead this weekend, a victory could win their ticket to the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 6th, to the third consecutive Super Bowl.

In the history of Super Bowls, 15 different franchises have won the coveted Super Bowl more than once. Eight of them have lifted the Super Bowl in consecutive years, starting with the Green Bay Packers, who won Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II. But no team has ever won it thrice in straight years. The Kansas City Chiefs, who won the title in 2023 and 2024, are on the verge of becoming the first.

Patrick Mahomes at 29 is considered the greatest of this era, one of the best in the game. The rare feat of being the only quarterback to win three titles would catapult him into the top quarterbacks of all-time, maybe a step above the legend Tom Brady himself. Or as former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton puts it in a GetUp episode, it could grant him an immortal title in the world of gridiron football and maybe sports in general.

Look, he’s doing something no quarterback has ever done. And to be labeled something comparable, it’s not. He has the opportunity to walk into immortality.

The Buffalo Bills need to pull some major moves and contain Patrick Mahomes and the potential X-factor in Travis Kelce to play their first Bowl since the early 1990s. The Chiefs haven’t pulled off any big wins this season but they have ensured a win in fifteen games, a strong portion being one-score games. They aren’t afraid of chasing the big picture and are willing to put everything on the line to ensure the picture is clear and the envisioned goal is completed.

Will Patrick Mahomes become the villain as the Bills chase a Super Bowl appearance

Patrick Mahomes has been a problem the whole season. Unfortunately, the problem doesn’t stem from his playing statistics or how much of a weapon he’s developed into. It is the issue that he has created by taking advantage of a rule that protects the quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes has become a challenging figure for opponents due to his tendency to delay his slide until the very last moment. By waiting until defenders are nearly on top of him, he puts them in a difficult position where avoiding contact becomes nearly impossible.

The divisional round game against the Houston Texans exposed the same. In the game, Mahomes sprinted up the field and slid just as defenders were closing in. As a result, two Texans defenders made minor contact with him on the ground and collided with each other.

Despite the minimal contact, a penalty was called. Mahomes’ late slide tactics have sparked debate, as they force defenders into situations where it’s hard to avoid a collision, making him a difficult and frustrating opponent to defend.

The Buffalo Bills have a huge task to contain Mahomes while ensuring that they haven’t broken any rules and intake penalties. Will they be able to do that or will Mahomes grin as he lifts the conference trophy once again?
