Ever since becoming the starter for the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2018, football fans have seen Patrick Mahomes throw every possible pass on the book. Even a no-look behind-the-back one.

The Chiefs entered into the second week of their pre-season training camp with almost an entire full-strength receiving and rushing core. With speedsters like Xavier Worthy, Marquise Brown, and Rashee Rice, the Chiefs’ focus, as per head coach Andy Reid, has been for Mahomes to go long on every opportunity.

However, on Wednesday, fans saw something very unique from the three-time Super Bowl MVP. Instead of applying his usual route and finding one of his receivers, Mahomes saw running back Isiah Pacheco wide open right in front of the red zone.

After taking the snap, Mahomes took a step back, assessing his options. He then faked the pass to the side and, just like prime LeBron James, threw one from behind his back to Pacheco.

The two-time Super Bowl winner then did the rest by scoring a walk-on touchdown. Several videos of the backhanded pass to Pacheco went viral instantly, garnering multiple reactions on the Internet.

Isiah Pacheco ready to shine beside Patrick Mahomes

Pacheco was often Mahomes’ go-to option in 2023 because his receivers kept dropping the ball. So, instead of going deep, the 28-year-old preferred running the ball more.

During his first two years with the Chiefs, the 25-year-old racked up 375 carries for 1765 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in the regular season. He also went nuclear in the playoffs last year, carrying the ball 81 times in three games for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus ranked him in their Top 10 NFL running backs from 2023 with a grade of 82.3.

With Worthy, Brown, Rice, and Kadarius Toney in the team, Pacheco might see less of the ball compared to previous years. However, the second-rounder is ready for a shift wherever coach Reid wants him to.

Whatever coach [Andy Reid and Matt Nagy] asks me to do. I’m willing to take on the role or the task and just be the guy that some of the guys look to as a leader.

The Chiefs play three pre-season games, starting with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In week 1 of the regular season, Patrick Mahomes and co. will have a replay of last season’s AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens.
