The whole NBA fandom woke up to one of the most surprising trades in the recent past, leaving many speechless, including the Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. Dallas Mavericks, the defending runners-up, and Los Angeles Lakers have sent shockwaves with their mega trade five days before the NBA trade deadline.
The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly trading Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz will receive Jalen Hood-Schifino along with two second-round picks as part of the deal.
Patrick Mahomes, who’s a die-hard Mavs fan, found himself in a bit of an existential crisis a week ahead of the Super Bowl. Mahomes, like most devoted Mavs fans, is a passionate admirer of Doncic. He dropped a two-word message on X, revealing his emotions about the unsettling trade.

The Mavericks were driven to trade Luka Doncic largely due to ongoing concerns about his conditioning, sources told ESPN. After a disappointing championship loss, frustration had been mounting within the organization over his lack of discipline regarding diet and fitness.
Doncic, who has been sidelined since Christmas Day with a calf injury, has frequently struggled with conditioning, never playing more than 72 games in a season. According to Dave McMenamin, his weight this season has reportedly reached as high as 260 pounds.
The fact that Luka Doncic had not requested a trade, as reported by Marc Stein, has made the deal more surprising. In fact, the Mavericks had been preparing to offer him a five-year, $345 million contract extension this summer—until general manager Nico Harrison seemingly shifted course.

The Mavericks did this on their own accord, getting back Anthony Davis but only one future first-round pick from the Lakers in 2029 for a 25-year-old regarded as a future MVP.

Following their Super Bowl title defense, Mahomes also gifted the point guard his own signed jersey during a Mavs game against the Denver Nuggets. The Slovenian star returned the grace with his own act of admiration in last June.
In the last season, Mahomes joined his wife on the sidelines for a Toronto Raptors game. During the Raptors game visit, the championship-winning couple received autographed Luka Doncic jerseys, presented to them by the Mavericks’ mascot.
