If Patrick Mahomes wasn’t motivated enough to defeat the Houston Texans in Week 14, then witnessing his former college team, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, defeat BYU to clinch the Big 12 Championship trophy, should provide him with enough juice to kick-start the Kansas City Chiefs’ revival.

Both Texas Tech and BYU finished the regular season with an 11-1 record. BYU’s only loss came against the Raiders in week 11.

With their Championship title on the line, the Cougars arrived at the Jones AT&T Stadium to exact revenge for the earlier defeat. However, quarterback Behren Morton foiled BYU’s plans. Morton threw 20 completions from 33 pass attempts for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns. Additionally, the Raiders’ defense forced six total turnovers, including two interceptions from BYU’s freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier.

Texas Tech won the game 34-7 and secured the program’s first-ever BIG 12 title, something even Patrick Mahomes couldn’t manage. The 2x NFL MVP celebrated the moment by posting a tweet.

With that win, Texas Tech is in the college football playoffs. The only thing that remains for them is to wait for the NCAA to announce their opponents.

Mahomes played three seasons (2014-2016) for the Red Raiders. He finished with a 13-16 record. In the 2016 season, the East Texas native threw 388 completions for 5052 yards (best in FBS), 53 total touchdowns (41 passing and 12 rushing), and 10 interceptions.

Patrick Mahomes’ teammate on the Chiefs was hit with a penalty from the NFL

The Chiefs are 6-6 following their latest defeat against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. During that game, Isiah Pacheco committed a foul, which was later deemed unnecessary roughness by the NFL.

Pacheco’s tackle on Cowboys defensive back DaRon Bland drew in the third quarter, appeared to be a legitimate hit. But upon careful consideration, the league decided to fine Pacheco $46,371.

What lessons has Patrick Mahomes learned from the recent defeats?

The Chiefs stumbled to a 5-5 record at the midway point of the season after suffering back-to-back losses against the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos. A win against the high-flying Indianapolis Colts ended the losing streak.

However, within a short span of time, the Chiefs lost to the Cowboys in Dallas. On one hand, this was the most-watched regular-season game ever; on the other, it marked the Chiefs’ sixth defeat in a season since the 2017 campaign. The Chiefs finished 10-6 that year and qualified for the wildcard round, where their journey ended.

Mahomes and Co. are in a similar situation this year. They must win the remaining games to have a chance of playing in the playoffs. It starts by defeating the Houston Texans.

You’ve got to win every game now – and hope that’s enough. We’re going to play a lot of good football teams coming up [Texans]. If we’re going to make the playoffs, we’re going to have to win them all. That’s got to be the mindset when we step into the [training] when we get back.

According to the NFL research, the Chiefs have a 34% chance of qualifying for the playoffs, which will increase to 49% if they defeat the Texans in Week 14. However, the percentage drops to just 11% with a loss.

Mahomes will play a big role against the Texans. He ranks fourth with 3283 yards from 285 completions, 22 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
