Patrick Mahomes was aiming for a three-peat on Sunday but ended up giving one of his worst performances ever in a Kansas City Chiefs shirt. He threw two interceptions in the first half, allowing the Philadelphia Eagles to take a 24-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Mahomes created separation to find an open receiver, but instead of finding a teammate, Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean intercepted him. To rub salt in the wound, DeJean scored a pick-six.

The misery wasn’t over for Mahomes. On first and ten, right at the mouth of the Chiefs end zone, the 29-year-old threw his second interception of the night. Eagles pass rusher Zack Baun dived to his right to pick off a loose pass from the Chiefs under center.

The Eagles retained the possession, and quarterback Jalen Hurts made the best use of it. At the tail end of the quarter, Hurts found AJ Brown for a 12-yard touchdown, opening up the largest gap the Chiefs had ever trailed in a Super Bowl game.

Patrick Mahomes threw just over 30 yards in the entire first half. According to ESPN analytics, Mahomes EPA per dropback was -1.21—he only threw one first down, and the Chiefs offensive success rate was 6.3%.

The second half wasn’t any better for Patrick Mahomes

While Kendrick Lamar performed at halftime, many Chiefs fans remembered the 28-3 game from the New England Patriots glory days. Tom Brady led a comeback in the second half to win on that day, and as luck would have it, he was in the stadium covering the game for FOX.

A little Brady magic through Mahomes’ hands was the requirement of the hour for the Chiefs’ fans. However, it was more of the same. Hurts threw the longest touchdown pass for the Eagles with just under three minutes left. He found WR DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard run, increasing the lead to 34.

Well, it’s foolish to count Mahomes out, as Shannon Sharpe mentioned before the game on his podcast. The 3x Super Bowl MVP finally came alive during garbage time. After setting up DeAndre Hopkins for a seven-yard touchdown run, Mahomes threw a 50-yard looped pass, which was finished off by rookie Xavier Worthy.

The game was too far gone. Saquon Barkley celebrated with Eagles general manager Howie Roseman on the sidelines as proof that the game was in the bag. The final outcome of Super Bowl LIX was Kansas City Chiefs 22-40 Philadelphia Eagles.

Mahomes on the final two drives completed 9 passes for 120+ yards and threw two touchdowns, posting a quarterback rating of 95.4 (18.9 in the first half). It was a debacle of epic proportions. His overall numbers were 21 completions from 32 attempts for 257 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions along with 25 yards on the ground. The stats eventually were inflated by his last-gasp heroics to save the game, but it was undoubtedly the worst-ever performance.
