The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of following the New England Patriots’ fate. As the team trails Philadelphia 24-0 at halftime, they will either script the second-greatest comeback in Super Bowl history after the 2016-17 Patriots or will let a nearly perfect run in the regular season go to waste like the 2007-08 Patriots.

For Patrick Mahomes, the game has been overwhelming. The quarterback looks out of it and the proof of that came when he threw a pick-six to none other than rookie Cooper DeJean. The turnover came in the second quarter as Mahomes scrambled to look for his receivers downfield.

He saw the open field but missed seeing DeJean run inward and threw the ball right to him. There have been under 20 pick-sixes in Super Bowl history and Cooper DeJean can proudly say he has one to his name on his birthday and against Patrick Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes has thrown five pick-sixes in his career

This marks the first time that Mahomes has thrown a pick-six in the Super Bowl. The quarterback has a total of five pick-sixes from 2017-2024 and the rest were during regular season games. In the playoffs, he has thrown a total of five interceptions not counting the 2 in the first half against Philadelphia.

The numbers are against Mahomes because historically, teams that get pick-sixes in the Super Bowl go on to win the championship. Quarterbacks are 1-12 when they get pick-six and the exception to that is Tom Brady. After tonight, Patrick Mahomes can either join Brady as the second player to do the unthinkable or join the rest.

The quarterback’s performance has been horrendous in the first half. He has 33 yards for 2 interceptions and the Chiefs offense has failed to get anything going.

This marks the first Super Bowl and playoff game in which Mahomes has two interceptions in one half. With one more half to go, it remains to be seen if Kansas City can turn things around or if Philadelphia will go on to win its second Super Bowl.
