With an impressive 30-24 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t let their crown of ‘undefeated champions’ slip, marking their eighth straight feat. However, for a moment in the game, their goal of three-peat appeared blurred as star quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a scary injury.
It happened in the second half of the game when Mahomes was making a touchdown pass before he twisted his ankle. Initially, the quarterback thought of “running off the field” to get his non-contract injury checked, but he was instructed by the coaching staff to stay put and they provided him with assistance for leaving the field.
Since the Chiefs’ entire hope to achieve the three-peat relies upon two-time Super Bowl MVP, head coach Andy Reid wasn’t willing to take any risk regarding his injury. Instantly after he twisted his ankle, he was demanded by his head coach to leave the field– which surprised Mahomes but he ultimately convinced him to get back after being checked.
Yeah, I thought he was joking. He said it [and] I was like, ‘C’mon, we’re not doing this again.’ He trusts me. Once the doctors checked it out and I was able to get back and do the drops again, he let me get back on the field.

Until the Chiefs’ head coach ascertained that Mahomes was feeling good and his injury was not serious, he didn’t let him get back on the field against the Bucs. Fortunately, he returned without missing any offensive snap and succeeded with an overtime feat at 30-24.

Despite the scary incident of Mahomes’ ankle injury, it was ultimately determined to be not serious after examination. In the post-game press conference, the first question that the 66-year-old head coach was his thoughts on the star quarterback’s injury.

Well, when he was being carried off, I wasn’t too easy with it. I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it, but he might have the loosest ankles in America.

He also appreciated the three-time Super Bowl champion for being “mentally tough” that he returned to the field in such a short span and didn’t let the winning streak break. The elite quarterback completed the game with 34-of-44 passes for 291 yards and three impressive touchdowns.
