- Patrick Mahomes returned to practice just over 100 days after tearing his ACL.
- Fans are amazed by his rapid recovery, comparing him to a "superhuman."
- The Kansas City Chiefs need Mahomes back early to remain playoff contenders.
Patrick Mahomes did not expect that his 2025 season would end in the manner that it did, both with the struggles he and his Kansas City Chiefs faced, and then tearing his ACL in the same game their playoff streak ended.
For the first time in a decade, the franchise went into the offseason knowing its exact timeline. That meant they would head into the unknown, that is, to choose between a full-blown rebuild or a significant retool of the current roster.
They chose to go with the latter and have now built a team that some believe is good enough to be a playoff contender. However, for it to be complete, they need their superstar quarterback back early.
Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL during their Week 15 clash against the Los Angeles Chargers. Since that was in the middle of December, going by the usual time it takes to recover from such an injury, the three-time Super Bowl MVP should not be expected to play before December this year.
After all, NBA star Kyrie Irving, who tore his ACL in February 2025, could have returned this season, but chose to continue his rehab and will play next season.

But not Patrick Mahomes, who is already back on the practice turf slinging a football, just a smidge over 100 days since he clutched his knee late in that game.
Fans laud Patrick Mahomes for his fast recovery
When Patrick Mahomes FaceTimed Travis Kelce during the latter’s latest contract signing, the tight end asked his quarterback whether he was slaying his recovery, to which the signal caller confirmed.
But fans were not prepared for that ‘slaying’ to be this early. It is not as if fans have not been surprised by an earlier-than-expected return from injury, as was the situation with Joe Burrow last season.
However, they were not prepared to see someone come back to practice this early from a torn ACL, which happens to be a significant injury and needs time to heal. Check out examples of their stunned reactions below.

Patrick Mahomes was just practicing light throwing drills. That is nowhere close to him being ready to return to play tackle football. Even then, fans were surprised as returning this soon indicates the determination the 30-year-old has shown.
Chiefs will need Patrick Mahomes to return earlier than scheduled
If one were to analyze everything Patrick Mahomes has been doing in the last month, it is evident that his recovery is ahead of schedule. However, it will still be up to team doctors and physicians to give him the green signal.

In the meantime, the Chiefs have traded for Justin Fields to lead the team in his place, and could also use the beleaguered dual-threat QB as a helping hand when Mahomes returns.
Despite that, their season depends on how fast the six-time Pro Bowler returns to play at Arrowhead Stadium. Without him, Fields can only take them so far.
But when he returns, expect the Chiefs to again become a potential Super Bowl competitor in what could become Travis Kelce’s last season in the NFL.
