Patrick Mahomes, with a straight face, admits being ashamed of his failed spike attempt against Bills

Patrick Mahomes can make every throw on Andy Reid's play sheet but just don't ask him to spike the ball in the red zone because he might fumble it unlike Kelce.

Patrick Mahomes will think twice about spiking the ball in future games. The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback experienced a rare embarrassment in front of his fans while attempting a celebration, usually handled by his good friend and teammate Travis Kelce.

On Sunday, the Chiefs played the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead. They recovered the ball on downs after a failed tush push attempt from Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Mahomes drove the ball inside the Bills’ fifteen-yard line and scored a rushing touchdown, giving the Chiefs a five-point lead. The 2x NFL MVP was pumped and went to imitate Kelce’s famous spike inside the red zone. He used every inch of his body to hit the ball on the ground, but the ball slipped out of his hand and went out of bounds.

CBS announcer Jim Nantz retorted, “His [Patrick Mahomes] worst pass on the night was on the spike.” Mahomes quickly exited the scene and converted the following two-point try. After returning to the Chiefs dugout, the sideline referee echoed Nantz’s words, “That might have been the worst spike I have ever seen.”

Yeah, yeah, I know. That’s the first time I have ever done this, so…

Patrick Mahomes kept a straight face and replied

Mahomes did not let the botched spike hinder his performance. He led the Chiefs to a 32-29 win by completing 280+ overall yards, 2 touchdowns, and a quarterback rating of 122.56.

Patrick Mahomes apologized for his embarrassing spike attempt

Mahomes was quick to make amends with his fans. He posted an apology text on X. “I also apologize. That is why I don’t try to spike the ball,” he wrote.

Mahomes’ spike was featured in the latest episode of Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast. The star tight end showed the clip to his older brother and retired Eagles center Jason Kelce. After watching it, Jason took a cheeky dig at Mahomes. “He can throw the ball anywhere on the field, but he can’t throw it directly into the ground,” Jason Kelce quipped.

Sometimes when you get into the end zone you’re just fired up, you don’t care what happens to the football.

Kelce further added that the touchdown play was only added a few days before the championship game. It was similar to Ravens QB Lamar Jackson’s trademark-designed touchdown runs.

When we added the play this week I was like, ‘That’s gonna f****** hit. We had never ran that play before. We never gave Pat the full ability to just keep it on the run.

Travis Kelce added

Mahomes doesn’t need an invitation to pull a rabbit out of the bag. The only area he needs to work on is spiking the ball. Maybe Kelce can give him private lessons when he is free from spending time with his girlfriend Taylor Swift.
