Patrick Mahomes refused to come off even though he was in immense pain after twisting his ankle during the Week 9 fixture against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Kansas City Chiefs led their NFC opponents, but he still wanted to see the game through until the final whistle.

A TikTok video on X (previously Twitter) shed light on some unseen conversations between Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid after the Chiefs quarterback went off injured. Two staff members escorted the 29-year-old on their shoulders to the medical tent after he reeled in pain while sitting on the bench.

Mahomes returned from the tent and sat down again, but cameras caught him walking freely once more. Coach Reid did not want to risk losing the three-time NFL MVP, so he wanted to replace him with Carson Wentz. However, Patrick, being the competitor he is, disagreed with him because he wanted to finish the game.

Patrick Mahomes can be heard saying to Andy Reid

What did Andy Reid say about him after Patrick Mahomes’ injury?

Mahomes barely missed anything before rejoining his team, to the relief of the Chiefs fans. He secured the reigning Super Bowl champions’ unbeaten start to the season (8-0) and their 14th consecutive victory, finishing the night with 34 of 44 for 291 yards and three touchdowns (two of them to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins).

After the game, Reid spoke with the media and provided some intel about what went down between him and Mahomes before sending him back onto the field.

I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it, but he might have the loosest ankles in America. It’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things… I told him I was going to take him out, and he wanted to fight me. He’s a tough kid.

Mahomes also chimed in and shared his side. The All-Pro shot caller revealed injuring the same ankle that he hurt the week before.

Definitely scary; I think it hurt more just because it was the same ankle I rolled last week. So scared me a little bit, but once I took my breath and kind of calmed down a little bit, it ended up not being too bad.

According to the last known report, Mahomes practiced at the normal pace during the last training days. The Chiefs can’t afford to lose their best player while on course for a historic three-peat. Up next, they will welcome the Denver Broncos at the Arrowhead in Week 10.
