In Short
  • Patrick Mahomes expressed shock over the Kansas City Chiefs trading Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams for multiple draft picks.
  • The Chiefs received the 29th overall pick, along with a fifth, sixth, and a 2027 third-round pick in the trade.
  • Kansas City plans to rebuild around Mahomes, including the potential release of offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor to save cap space.

When Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls, he had a solid defense to count on, led by the likes of Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie.

After the team lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2022 AFC Championship game, the franchise spent three of its picks to move up eight spots, knowing the investment was worth going after the California native.

Their intentions were clear on what they needed to make the most out of their squad and hoist Vince Lombardi trophies. Eventually, the then-rookie spearheaded a vaunted secondary that feasted on opposing quarterbacks over the next two seasons.

McDuffie’s impact was such that even after winning two Super Bowls, the franchise did not believe it needed to tinker with his unit when they were attempting to go for a third straight ring.

After that dream ended in embarrassing fashion, the Chiefs thought of giving it one more shot. That, too, became a pipe dream, leaving the team to rethink its strategy.

Now, as they move into a rebuilding phase, the first order of business they undertook was to trade the Washington star to the Los Angeles Rams for a bucket load of picks.

Damn..

This was the three-time Super Bowl MVP’s reaction when he learned that Trent McDuffie was no longer going to be his teammate. After all, Patrick Mahomes understood that his team just lost the rock of their defensive backfield.

Chiefs focused on future with Patrick Mahomes after Trent McDuffie trade

Even though Patrick Mahomes might have been jolted by the news of Trent McDuffie‘s trade to the Los Angeles Rams, he should feel good about what the Kansas City Chiefs are doing for him.

The franchise receives the 29th overall pick, a fifth and sixth-rounder this year, and a 2027 third-round pick. That leaves GM Brett Veach to add quite a bit of talent around the superstar quarterback.

Admittedly, it might be a while before the 30-year-old is back playing football, but the franchise does not want to take chances with a golden opportunity to rebuild now before it is too late.

With Travis Kelce possibly about to play his last season with the team, the Chiefs have to think about life after their superstar tight end retires. They also have to fix roster problems on both the offense and defense.

The franchise is no longer going to get the perceived favors they received from officials and the league, as other teams have leapfrogged them in sheer performance.

If Patrick Mahomes has to lead them again to Super Bowls, he needs a team full of top-tier contributors. In that regard, Veach thought it was better to trade Trent McDuffie rather than overpay him, and restrict the financial flexibility they gained after restructuring their QB’s contract.

Chiefs also to release Patrick Mahomes’ protector

Trent McDuffie might be the first big-name star from the Kansas City Chiefs to find himself no longer wearing the iconic red and white jersey, but he will not be the last.

Chiefs have informed OT Jawaan Taylor that he will be released before the start of the league year barring a trade, per sources. Taylor’s release will save the Chiefs $20 million under the cap.

For someone who was seen as the long-term answer to protecting Patrick Mahomes’ right side, this move might surprise many. After all, even though Jawaan Taylor had some problems staying onside, he could still hold a candle against the better pass rushers in the league.

If they find a trade partner in time, the Chiefs could get hold of additional draft picks. If not, even then, they would be saving $20 million in cap space, which could be crucial to get someone like Tyreek Hill back.
