Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney called out Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for taking advantage of a relaxed rule. Freeney was commenting on Mahomes’ action amid the win against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
With just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, the Chiefs faced a second-and-7. Quarterback Mahomes escaped the pocket and sprinted toward the sideline. Initially slowing down as if preparing to step out of bounds, Mahomes hesitated briefly before continuing his run, ultimately gaining 33 yards along the sideline. His team Kansas City Chiefs are leading the league with six wins from six games despite Mahomes being a no-show in numbers lately.
Freeney joined Kay Adams in her show “Up and Adams” where the former defensive end came out with the bold statement. Although some found the play to be quite spectacular, Freeney didn’t think so. In his statement, the 7x Pro Bowler also intended a dig at the NFL for protecting quarterbacks so much.
“Patrick took advantage of the soft ass rules they have for the quarterbacks.”

There exist several rules in the NFL to prevent unnecessary or dangerous hits on quarterbacks. Quarterbacks are often considered defenseless outside of the pocket or near the sidelines. The rule therefore limits the defensive players from using excess force or indulging the quarterback in such situations. This stems from the fact that these are counted as violations and typically result in penalties for roughing the passer or unnecessary roughness.
The quarterback, who acknowledged that he wanted to win by any means, used the perception that he was about to go out of bounds to his advantage. The 49ers defenders could only watch as Mahomes made his way to the end zone.
Apart from Freeney, former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert also suggested that Mahomes skillfully exploited the rules designed to protect quarterbacks during runs. Both Freeney and Benkert opined that defenders should not refrain from giving hits to quarterbacks in such circumstances.
Ji’Ayir Brown highlights defenders’ dilemma in situations like Patrick Mahomes’ recent touchdown
49ers safety Ji’Ayir Brown explained the defense’s challenge and said that they tried to contain Patrick Mahomes, particularly during his scrambles, via Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher of KNBR. Brown pointed out that Mahomes’ unpredictability makes it harder to contain the player. He also noted down the issues correlated with almost on-bounds quarterback situations.
Brown noted that quarterbacks like Mahomes frequently feign stepping out of bounds but remain in play, leaving defenders with split-second decisions. The defense struggled to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 as the reigning champions look to keep the momentum intact.
"We're always in a tough spot as a defense, it's that fine line you have to toe. It's tough, quarterbacks fake going out of bounds then stay in bounds. There's decisions you have to make."

An injury-ridden San Francisco 49ers will play against the Dallas Cowboys. The game will take place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and they will be looking forward to bouncing back from the loss and restoring a decent overall record. Meanwhile, the Super Bowl hopefuls Chiefs play a struggling Las Vegas Raiders at the Allegiant Stadium.
