It has been a tough year for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. After being billed as Super Bowl contenders, their 2025-26 campaign has turned out to be anything but that.
In a season where they should have been using the motivation of losing Super Bowl LIX to snatch back their throne, the franchise, which has dominated the AFC for the past 10 seasons, looks like they need to hit the reset button.
Their offense has struggled mightily, with most of the blame falling on Travis Kelce‘s shoulders. However, Mahomes was not spared, as his turnovers have become a problem for the once-dominant franchise.
When they welcomed the Los Angeles Chargers to Arrowhead Stadium, they had only one goal: to win their Week 15 game and then continue to do so until the end of the season.
That is not a possibility after the 4th quarter came with the worst news Chiefs fans could witness or hear about. After the game, Patrick Mahomes wrote this on X-
Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.

This was after he went down clutching his knee with his team down three points in the last quarter. After being helped off the field, tests determined the superstar had torn the ACL in his left knee.
Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs will miss playoffs for 1st time after 10 years
Aside from the season-ending injury, which will see Patrick Mahomes stay away from contact sports at least for the better part of next year, the Chiefs may have received their best opportunity to try to build a new dynasty.
It so happens that as the 30-year-old QB was making his way into the medical room, his deputy, Gardner Minshew, threw a deep pass to Travis Kelce to try and get past the 1st down marker, Chargers safety Derwin James intercepted it.
With that, any chance of the home team trying to keep their playoff hopes alive went up in a cloud of smoke. After their 13-16 loss, the Chiefs have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

It brings an end to their 10-year run of postseason appearances, which included three Super Bowl wins and two losses. If anything, this makes it the most disastrous season of their decade, which might force the organization to rethink its approach.
Chris Jones has nothing but love for ‘brother’ Patrick Mahomes
The mood across Chiefs Kingdom was of gloom, disappointment, and overall sadness that their stellar run had come to an end in this manner. Star defensive tackle Chris Jones summed up what it felt.

I just hugged him, man. That’s my brother. We’ve been through so much. We can be mad at ourselves, and we can ask God why. But at times it’s so much so a lesson that you’ve been taught along the journey.
Chris Jones told reporters
He has nothing but love for Patrick Mahomes, as he believes there is no answer as to why the QB and the team had to go through what they have. But he believes this is a journey, and it is set to continue.

If the poor performances were not enough, the 3-time Super Bowl MVP’s injury could bring ramifications to the team. As they look towards ending their season in whatever manner possible, there is uncertainty as to what next season will look like.
