Carlos Alcaraz has time and again complained about the schedule, saying it gives him not much time to enjoy his life outside of the tour. After returning to the tour following his four-month injury layoff, the Spaniard competed at the US Open, during which he revealed that he plans to skip tournaments and take long breaks in the future to avoid possible injuries.
Because of his comments, Team Europe’s captain Yannick Noah was worried Alcaraz could skip the Laver Cup. But he competed and won the two matches he played (one singles and one doubles). Team Europe went on to win the trophy by beating Team World with a score of 13-5.
Alcaraz’s decision to compete in Laver Cup and other exhibition events is always questioned by many. But Patrick Mouratoglou believes that for the 23-year-old, such events bring the joy back to the court. On his Instagram, Serena Williams’ former coach said non-stop work can eventually become monotonous and can take the joy away.
Carlos is a player who saturates when he plays too much tennis. At some point, he doesn’t have the pleasure anymore, the joy anymore; he’s not creative anymore on the court, and his level drops a lot. So for him to participate in other competitions can make a lot of sense.
Alcaraz will next fly to Tokyo to compete at the ATP 500 Japan Open, where he defeated Taylor Fritz in the final last year. He will be playing in an ATP 500 tournament for the third time this season, following the Qatar Open (won by beating Arthur Fils and the Barcelona Open (where he injured his wrist).
Is he an isolated case? Probably not, and I think it’s difficult for players to play the same kind of competitions. And imagine one year, then a second year, then a third year. At some point, they get bored, tired mentally, and this affects their results and can potentially also bring some injuries.
Patrick Mouratoglou added
At the US Open, Alcaraz lost to eventual runner-up Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. He will be chasing his third title of the season in Tokyo, following wins at the Qatar Open and the Australian Open. In Melbourne, he beat Novak Djokovic and completed the Career Grand Slam.
Carlos Alcaraz responds after a marriage proposal
It has become pretty common to see Carlos Alcaraz receiving marriage proposals when he is playing. At the Australian Open this season, he received three marriage proposals from the crowd, one after the other. First, someone shouted, “Carlos, marry my daughter!” Another fan shouted, “Marry my sister-in-law,” and it was then followed by, “Marry me.” Alcaraz only gave a faint smile while the crowd roared with laughter.

Then, this time at the Laver Cup, after his win over Taylor Fritz, when former player Sam Querrey asked him how he manages to keep smiling in tough moments during his on-court interview, a fan yelled, “Marry my sister, Carlos.” The seven-time Grand Slam champion broke into a huge smile and said:
What the heck? I’m too young still… Well I just… What was the question, sorry?
Roger Federer and Andy Murray, both of whom were in the stands, also couldn’t help but laugh.

Before defeating Fritz in singles, Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik beat the pair of Alexander Bublik and the American in doubles. The only matches that Team World could win ere the singles matches played by Brandon Nakashima, Learner Tien, and Alex de Minaur.
At the Japan Open, Alcaraz will lock horns with Alex Michelsen in the opening round. They will be facing each other for the first time in singles.
