Legendary coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently shared his views on the vast difference between men’s and women’s tennis, using a clip in which Serena Williams highlighted the difference between the genders. However, Mouratoglou, who has coached players in the ATP and WTA pointed out some important aspects of women’s and men’s tennis.

The last time an exhibition match dubbed the Battle of the Sexes was played was at the 1998 Australian Open. It was between Karsten Braasch and Venus Williams and Serena Williams. The Williams sisters had confidently declared that they could beat any male player ranked outside the Top 200.

Braasch, then ranked 203rd beat Serena Williams 6-1 before defeating Venus 6-2. The defeat was a practical reality for Serena Williams about the difference between men’s and women’s tennis. She revealed more about it on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ in 2013, claiming that men are a lot faster than women.

For me, men’s and women’s tennis are almost completely two different sports. It’s a completely different sport. The men are a lot faster, they serve harder, and they hit hard. It’s just a different game.

Her ex-coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, then backed her claims by stating that men are much faster than women, movement-wise. He added that Williams has trained with the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov and both were impressed with her shots.

It’s funny that it’s coming from Serena and that she says men’s and women’s tennis are two different sports. I think it is. That’s true, mainly for one reason: It’s the fact that men are so much faster than women, movement-wise. Serena is talking about the power of men but Serena was hitting with guys. When I was coaching her, she played many times with Grigor Dimitrov, (Stefanos) Tsitsipas. There was 0 problems. Hitting from the centre of the court, hitting crosscourt. No problem. They were impressed. When the movement was involved, then it was different and this I agree with her.

After that, on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’, Serena Williams then added that if she were to play against Andy Murray, she would lose to him straight sets within ten minutes of the match.

If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 maybe 10 minutes.

Mouratoglou then revealed plans to make a match between women and men more competitive. He revealed that he would reduce the difference between the genders.

We had the idea for Serena to play a match against Andy Murray and then we had an idea on how to reduce the difference between men and women to make this match extremely competitive. I am not saying what because I want to do it one day.

Djokovic delivered an excellent performance to beat Musetti in straight sets. After the match, he was asked about how he felt seeing Serena Williams and Del Potro in the stands. He admitted he was star-struck by their presence.

I was stars-truck! It was amazing to see first Delpo, obviously a long-time friend and a rival, so happy to have him around and get his support from the box. It was amazing, it was [the] first time to have Delpo in the box, so I want to thank him really for coming. And Serena, that was a surprise. I didn’t know.
