Until Novak Djokovic completely believes that he can still win a Grand Slam title, he won’t be able to win his historic 25th Major, believes Patrick Mouratoglou. Djokovic, although he played every semifinal in the four Majors this year, failed to progress beyond that.
After giving the walkover to World No.3 Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open, he lost in straight sets, first to Jannik Sinner at the French Open and Wimbledon, and then to Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open. Major titles have eluded the Serb since the 2023 US Open, and since then, Alcaraz and Sinner have split the titles, winning four each.
He is the best of all time without any doubt. But even the way he expresses it makes me feel that he doesn’t believe he can. When you hear the press conference after his loss against Alcaraz at the US Open. He basically says, ‘I don’t know how I can do that.’ If he doesn’t believe, then it’s not going to happen.

Djokovic, this year, has so far lifted the Geneva Open- an ATP 250 event- also his 100th singles title, making him the third man in the Open Era to win 100 or more singles trophies after Jimmy Connors and his longtime rival Roger Federer. Apart from Geneva, the 38-year-old also reached the final of the Miami Open but couldn’t go past Jakub Mensik.
Patrick Mouratoglou on what he would tell Novak Djokovic as his coach
If Patrick Mouratoglou coached Novak Djokovic, he would have tried to find ways to rekindle the fire within Nole, believing that it’s the only key to making him perform like he used to before. Serena Williams‘ former coach cited Djokovic’s Paris Olympics campaign last year, saying his motivation to clinch the gold medal made him beat Carlos Alcaraz even though in other tournaments he was losing to the Spaniard.

I would make sure that Novak would really believe that he could beat them, because I think that he can. I think it’s a question of motivation. In his career, when it was a question of life or death for him, he was always successful. I think the example of the final of the Olympic Games is a great example. He was completely dominated by Carlos and Jannik and not winning anything, and then suddenly the Olympics come, and it’s a title he wants more than anything, and he delivers the match to beat Carlos in the final.

Djokovic was last seen in action at the US Open. He also watched the thrilling Davis Cup match between Brazil’s Joao Fonseca and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, held in Athens.
Djokovic has moved to Athens with his family and has confirmed that he will be playing the first edition of the Hellenic Championship, an ATP 250 event in Athens, scheduled to start on November 1. It’s uncertain where he will play next.
The Asian swing is underway, and next week, two ATP 500 tournaments- the Japan Open and the Korea Open- will kick-start on September 24. Djokovic will not feature in both events. Sinner will headline the China Open, while Alcaraz (who defeated the Italian last year) has decided to skip the Beijing event and instead will be making his debut at the Japan Open.
Last year on the Asian swing, the 24-time Grand Slam champion participated in the Shanghai Masters and reached the final, only to lose to Sinner in straight sets. The Shanghai Masters was the last tournament Djokovic played in 2024, skipping the ATP Finals even though he was qualified for the year-end championships.
