The man with 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic, is currently struggling due to his age. This year, in the first three Majors, he has made it to every semifinal.

At the Australian Open, an injury forced him to retire mid-match after he lost the first set against Alexander Zverev. Then at the French Open and Wimbledon, World No.1 Jannik Sinner knocked him out in straight sets. The “nasty fall” he suffered during his Wimbledon quarterfinal clash with Flavio Cobolli did not allow him to play to his full potential against Sinner.

Although now he is struggling a lot, what he has achieved in tennis is well known. It’s his strong mentality, according to Serena Williams‘ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou, that has made him what he is today. Another quality that Mouratoglou likes in Djokovic is his ability to remain headstrong in his beliefs. Mouratoglou told Nick Kyrgios during the All on the Table Podcast:

I really love him. Do you know what I love in him? He is probably the only tennis player that I have seen for very long…huge champion…who does not care. He has his beliefs, and he stands with his beliefs, even if everyone is against him. This is unbelievable.

Djokovic has won just one title this season- the Geneva Open, by beating Hubert Hurkacz. Apart from Geneva, Djokovic also reached the final of the Miami Open but lost in straight sets to Jakub Mensik.

We are in a world where everybody is following the trends and is scared to do something wrong. He is careful, but when he believes in something, nothing is going to stop him. I think this is really, really special. I really value that so much, even more today with social media and everything.

Patrick Mouratoglou added

Djokovic last won a Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open. He was nearly invincible that year as he came close to completing the Calendar Grand Slam, which Carlos Alcaraz denied him by beating him in the Wimbledon final. Since his 2023 US Open win, Djokovic has reached just one Major final- in 2024 Wimbledon, which he lost to the Spaniard once again.

Patrick Mouratoglou thinks drop in motivation level reason behind Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam struggles

Patrick Mouratoglou has claimed that the reason why Novak Djokovic has failed to win a Grand Slam title after the 2023 US Open final was that he surpassed Rafael Nadal‘s Major record. According to Naomi Osaka‘s coach, the Serb suffered a drop in his motivation level after becoming the best of all time in terms of Grand Slam wins.

You know the thing he was fighting for 15 years, suddenly there is no more goal. So I think he completely lost the motivation, which is easy to understand. It’s normal. He got motivated again just for the Olympics, and then he was a beast at the Olympics.

Patrick Mouratoglou told Nick Kyrgios on the All on the Table podcast

Djokovic, in the Paris Olympics final, defeated Carlos Alcaraz to win his career’s first Olympic gold medal. He then expressed his wish to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as well.

Even the 38-year-old has admitted that he suffered a drop in his motivation level due to Nadal’s absence on the tour. The 22-time Grand Slam champion lifted his last Major at the 2022 French Open and missed almost the entire 2023 season due to injury problems. He was just a shadow of his former self when he made his comeback in 2024 and eventually decided to call time on his career at the Davis Cup last November after Spain’s defeat to the Netherlands.

Although Nole wants to play the Los Angeles Olympics, he has also dropped retirement hints after his Grand Slam exits this year. In the recently concluded Wimbledon, Djokovic, for the first time since 2017, has failed to progress to the final.

Djokovic will next be chasing his 25th Major at the US Open. Last year in the tournament, Alexei Popyrin knocked him out in the third round.
