If fans thought the tennis offseason would be boring, they were wrong. When the fans were settling in for a quiet December, the tennis world decided to throw a curveball that nobody saw coming. Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero, the dynamic duo, officially called it quits.
For seven years, these two were practically inseparable. They were the blueprint for how a player-coach relationship should look. But as everyone knows, nothing gold can stay, especially in professional sports. Patrick Mouratoglou has entered the chat to share his unfiltered thoughts on the entire situation. Mouratoglou said on Instagram:
It was working incredibly well. Carlos was crazy successful. So when you put all this together, nobody imagined that this would break at some point. The only reason why there was a doubt was the documentary on Netflix. To be able to coach well, the player needs to feel understood, and the coach has to feel I can have an impact on what’s important.
Alcaraz is sitting pretty with six Grand Slams under his belt at the ripe old age of 22. He’s got two French Opens, two Wimbledons, and two US Open trophies collecting dust on his shelf. By all metrics, the Ferrero-Alcaraz partnership was a massive success. They turned a promising kid into a generational nightmare for anyone standing across the net. Mouratoglou added:
I would make a parallel that maybe will sound strange, but it’s exactly like a couple. There’s a married couple, you think that they are the ideal couple, ‘Wow, I wish my couple would be as great as theirs’, and six months later, they break up and everybody says, ‘How come?’ This breakup between Carlos and Juan Carlos shows that nobody knows what’s happening behind closed doors. It’s a difficult moment for Carlos for sure, being so close to a Grand Slam. Nobody can say what’s going to happen.
Mouratoglou, never one to shy away from a bold analogy, compared the split to a married couple that everyone envies right before they file for divorce. In a video that’s making the rounds on social media, the former coach of Serena Williams admitted he was just as blindsided as the rest of the fandom.
Is Patrick Mouratoglou eyeing the empty seat?
Patrick Mouratoglou is currently a free agent. Since parting ways with Naomi Osaka back in July 2025, he hasn’t picked up a new full-time gig. He’s had stints with Simona Halep and Holger Rune, and obviously the legendary run with Serena, but right now? He’s available.

Alcaraz has already brought Samuel Lopez on board, and the split with Ferrero seems to be more about “organizational evolution” rather than a desperate need to fix a broken game.
However, Mouratoglou has a history of gravitating toward high-profile stars, and ‘Carlitos’ is as high-profile as they come right now.
The future of Team Alcaraz
At the end of the day, this split marks the end of an era. Juan Carlos Ferrero took a 15-year-old kid with big dreams and molded him into a world-beater. Their breakup statement was filled with the usual “mutual respect” and “forever grateful” fluff, but it’s clear this is a major turning point.

Carlos Alcaraz is entering his prime without the man who built his game foundation. It’s a risky move, but maybe a necessary one to keep things fresh. As for Ferrero, he just won ATP Coach of the Year, so he won’t be waiting long for job offers.
As for fans, they just have to get used to seeing a different face in the box. And if Mouratoglou ends up being that face, well… grab the popcorn, because the drama is just getting started. For now, Alcaraz has an objective to win the Australian Open. The Spaniard is looking to become the youngest man to achieve the Career Grand Slam.
