Mike Vrabel’s 50th birthday was filled with memorable moments. The new Patriots head coach broke up a fight between players, gave autographs, and confronted a reporter by defending Stefon Diggs.
NBC Sports Boston veteran Phill Perry questioned Vrabel about Diggs’ condition. The Pro Bowler suffered a torn Achilles near the end of last year, and even though he’s looked terrific during the Patriots camp since joining in July, there are still doubts about his week one availability.
Perry kept pushing for an answer from Vrabel, and he snapped.
Did you really believe that, Phil? I mean, you’re a smart guy. I don’t know where you went to school—it wasn’t Ohio State. But do you really believe that? Do you really believe that Phil, or are you just trying to bait me into something?

Earlier in the day, Dianna Russini from The Athletic visited the Patriots’ training ground to interview Diggs. The 31-year-old played coy while answering her questions on whether he would be cleared to play on opening day.
We’ll see. Everybody’s excited, man… The coaches aren’t too excited. I’m not too excited. I’m just trying to take it day by day, so we’ll see. We just don’t know where it’s gonna go.

Diggs played eight games for the Houston Texans in 2024. He tore his Achilles tendon while facing the Colts in Week 8. Before his season ended, Diggs amassed 47 catches for 496 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Vrabel brought Diggs to New England. He signed a three-year, $69 million deal. Around June, Diggs found himself in trouble with the media after partying with a questionable substance in Miami. Vrabel and the Patriots looked the other way so that Diggs could focus on the camp.
Mike Vrabel broke up a fight at Patriots camp
Diggs is the least of Vrabel’s problems at the moment. He once again had to jump in the middle of a fight during Thursday’s joint training session with the Minnesota Vikings.

Footage showed that a couple of players began fighting following a disastrous tackle. Others joined in, including Vrabel. The Patriots Ring of Honor member managed to out-muscle the players and broke up the fight.

This wasn’t the first time Vrabel had to get his hands dirty, which left him bloodied. Last week, while hosting the Washington Commanders, rookie Will Campbell accidentally made contact with his coach during a skirmish, resulting in a small cut and visible bleeding on his cheek.
Second-year quarterback Drake Maye told WEEI that Vrabel will do anything for his players. He compared the blood on Verbel’s cheeks to Donald Trump’s gunshot wound.

The Patriots drafted Maye 3rd overall last year. He started 12 games and posted a 3-9 record. Despite the awful win/loss record, Maye looked solid in the pocket. He racked up 225 completions for 2276 yards (66.6% completion), 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions en route to a Pro Bowl nod.
After the season ended, the Patriots fired Jerod Mayo to appoint Vrabel. Vrabel spent the 2024 season as an advisor for the Cleveland Browns after leaving the Tennessee Titans. In Tennessee, he posted a 54/45 win/loss record, winning the AFC South twice and appearing in the AFC Championship game in 2019, which the Titans lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
