Aaron Rodgers is playing his 20th season in the NFL, and during that time he has influenced countless young quarterbacks, and Drake Maye is one of them. The New England Patriots rookie had a fanboy moment post-game when he met the 4x NFL MVP on Thursday.
Following Rodgers’ first-ever home win for the New York Jets, the veteran hung around the MetLife turf, speaking with the media and exchanging pleasantries. Maye and the Patriots lost the game, but he did not skip the opportunity to shake hands with the 40-year-old Super Bowl winner.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo shared a clip of the two quarterbacks shaking hands as Drake Maye can be heard saying “I’m waiting for the GOAT.”

The exchange must have left a sour taste in the Patriots fans’ mouths because, in their view, the word GOAT is reserved for Tom Brady, who won six Super Bowls during his time with the Boston franchise. The Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed spoke with Drake Maye about his exchange of words with Aaron Rodgers. The first-round pick revealed that he grew up idolizing Rodgers.
He [Aaron Rodgers] was my favorite player growing up. I had a phone case with Aaron Rodgers on it for like five years of my life. He was doing a press conference, and I was late getting back here but just wanted to let him know I'm a big fan. I enjoyed watching him tonight even though it was against us. Still, always a fan at heart, first.Drake Maye said
Will Drake Maye start for the Patriots in week 3?
Maye saw ample game time in the pre-season as head coach Jerod Mayo assessed his options. It’s been the opposite in the first three games in the regular season, as Mayo preferred to start with veteran Jacoby Brissett.
The former third-round pick looked rusty, throwing just one touchdown and completing only 368 passing yards. Mayo benched Brissett, bringing in Maye for the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter during the Jets game, which they lost 24-3.
It begs the question: how long will Mayo play Brissett as the starter? But Maye is ready to stay put and show up when required.
That's what I'm doing week in, week out, being ready when my name is called and going out there to try to make some plays. I've been preparing like I'm the starter.Drake Maye said
Would Jerod Mayo consider a Patriots QB change? "I don't know. We talk about it every single week, you're competing for a job. We'll get together as a coaching staff."

Mayo hasn’t announced any changes in the quarterback department just yet. Yet at some point, they have to take the harsh route like the Carolina Panthers.
It’s a long week ahead of their trip to Levi’s Stadium to face the San Francisco 49ers. In the meantime, Mayo needs to sort out not just the quarterback conundrum but also the leaky offensive line that allowed the Green & White to run 39 plays, run for 88 yards (4.9 average), and convert 71.4% on third down.
