The University of North Carolina alum Drake Maye was spectacular on Sunday afternoon, leading the New England Patriots to upset the conference leader Buffalo Bills. The Tar Heels were allegedly restricted by the former and controversial head coach, Bill Belichick to celebrate Maye and the latest Patriots victory.

In a surprising 23-20 victory over the Bills in Buffalo, Maye completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards, racking up a passer rating of 101.1. He was consistent in his performance, delivering precise throws throughout the game. Yet, there was no considerable celebration from the Tar Heels for their fifth-highest quarterback in passing yards with 8,018 yards in 26 starts over three years.

According to 247Sports’ Ross Martin, UNC head coach Bill Belichick has issued a directive instructing the team’s account to refrain from tweeting or retweeting any Patriots-related content. Belichick, who led New England for 24 seasons from 2000 to 2024, won six Super Bowls before being dismissed following a four-win season. He has since held a silent beef with his former employer, engaging in snarky banters from time to time.

However, the UNC Tar Heels have updated the profile with an edit of the player, comparing one of the dimes he threw in the Patriots vs. the Bills game to one of his former games for the Tar Heels. The post from their handle was almost two hours after the report against Belichick came out.

Scott Zolak rips into Bill Belichick while praising Drake Maye

Scott Zolak, an American broadcaster and former professional quarterback for nine seasons, had words for the former Patriots head coach. Zolak, speaking on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak and Bertrand, admitted that while he didn’t want to believe the report, the track record was not in favor of Belichick.

Zolak questioned Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels for not being happy and expressive about what he described as a coming out for the alum, but utilizing his name and presence for a camp in August.

You’re not going to honor this kid on his coming out party in the National Football League on the national stage? But you can have him come to your camp and stand there and take pictures with him? That’s all cool and fly back in August. This is about as bad as it gets for that program. This is pathetic. This is sad.

The former Patriots quarterback also pointed to the fact that the Maye family has been historically connected to the sports programs at the University of North Carolina. Mark Maye, Drake Maye’s father, played as a quarterback for the Tar Heels from 1984 to 1987. Meanwhile, his brother Luke Maye was one of the heroes for the Tar Heels basketball team, winning the national championship in 2017. Zolak added:

That kid is family to that program. His whole family went there… If I was every other member of Carolina, I wouldn’t honor this. I would go and tweet the damn stuff out. What a sad state. What a sad state down there. That’s how petulant you are.

The beef with the Patriots has also affected the Tar Heels players, as he has banned the scouts from the Foxborough organization, from their facility in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels are 2-3 and in the bottom four of the ACC. They recently lost to Clemson Tigers on Saturday 38-10 in their first conference game of the season.
