Former Clipper Paul George is looking to achieve his championship dreams with the 76ers.
Paul George and Kawhi Leonard
Paul George on an episode of “Podcast P with Paul George” revealed the details of his contract negotiations with the Los Angeles Clippers, and it’s clear that he felt disrespected by the team’s initial offer. He wanted a deal similar to Kawhi Leonard’s, who was also a key player for the Clippers at the time.
He expressed his frustration with the negotiations, stating that he felt like he was being undervalued by the team. He wanted a deal that reflected his worth to the team, however, the Clippers were unwilling to budge, and the negotiations stalled.
Just to put it out there, I never wanted to leave LA… This is where I wanted to finish at, and I wanted to work as hard as possible to win one in LA… Then I hear wind of what they're going to give Kawhi so I'm like, just give me what Kawhi got. Y'all view us the same. We came here together, we want to finish this shit together.Paul George said on his Podcast
Despite his impressive performance on the court, as he played 74 games and had one of his most efficient seasons, Paul George was not offered a deal that he felt was fair.
However, the Clippers were unable to come to an agreement with PG13, and he ultimately left LA to join the Philadelphia 76ers. In the end, he got the maximum offer from the 76ers, but he made it clear that he wanted to stay in LA and finish his career with the Clippers.
Paul George opens up about leaving former teammate Kawhi Leonard
Paul George also shared his thoughts about leaving longtime teammate Kawhi Leonard and the difficult conversation he had with Leonard before departing. He felt obligated to have a conversation with The Klaw, considering their close friendship and on-court partnership over the past five seasons.
Absolutely, I owed Kawhi that conversation. I called him up and was just like, 'Man, listen, you know I think I'ma go elsewhere. Conversations with the Clippers didn't go how I wanted to… I was like, 'Man, like I gotta do what's best.' And he understood.Paul George added
Leonard supported his decision wholeheartedly while George valued his blessing, considering him one of his best friends in the league. Despite their close relationship, George had to prioritize his own career goals, including the pursuit of an NBA championship.
George’s partnership with Leonard in Los Angeles didn’t yield the desired results, with only three playoff series wins and one conference finals appearance in five seasons. Now, George is looking to achieve his championship dreams with the 76ers, leaving behind a significant chapter in his career with Leonard and the Clippers.
