The Philadelphia 76ers had high hopes for a championship run once they signed Paul George to join Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. That trio, along with the retooled bench, was deemed to be the best team on paper.

That paper, though, folded quickly. Maxey was the sole player to stay healthy for much of the season. Embiid and George struggled with injuries for much of the season. That alone saw the team lose a lot of games and stay outside the playoff seedings.

Even after the two superstars came back, they did not look 100%. Something seemed to be bothering them, and the organization took a decision to first shut down the Paris Olympics gold medalist. Then, they hoped George would at least continue.

But he was resorting to injections, painkillers, whatever he could legally put inside his body to help him to continue playing basketball. Soon, that became too much, and the 76ers decided to end his misery earlier than desired.

During the offseason, Paul George admitted his body did not hold up to the rigors, and shutting it down early was the best option. Franchise fans felt it was a good decision, and hoped for a better 2025-26 campaign.

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left knee Monday to treat an injury suffered during a recent workout, a team official tells ESPN. George will now begin a rehab program and be re-evaluated prior to start of training camp.

This latest updates indicate a procedure was required to fix his knee after injuring it in a workout. The 76ers’ medical staff believe he should be fine by the time the season starts. However, this constant need for surgeries has started to enrage fans.

Fans questioning Paul George’s future as a player

When this news dropped on X, it sent Philadelphia 76ers fans into a fit of rage. They believe the $211 million contract Paul George signed has seemingly gone to waste. The 35-year-old’s injury history is already concerning enough.

Now he is getting injured in workouts before training camp, and it requires surgery. If this is the situation before the 2025-26 season starts, Sixers fans worry George’s health issues are going to derail another season. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Fans believe the nine-time All-Star has become more of a podcaster than a basketball player. He seemingly has more podcast clips than games played in the NBA. Some say it is the right time for him to end his playing career, and dedicate his time to his work in front of the camera.

76ers hope Paul George gets better in time to aid Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey

The Philadelphia 76ers’ medical staff might be hopeful of a quick return. However, the franchise’s top brass would hope he does not miss too many games, particularly towards the end of the season.

If the team is to compete with the best playoff contenders, Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey have to be a combined force. For that to happen, they first need to be collectively healthy enough to play a lot of games and work on their chemistry.

Once that is done, then they can work on their nuances in time before the playoffs. The Eastern Conference should be easier than last season. Injuries might impact the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics.

Along with the struggles of the Miami Heat, the 76ers have a decent path to fight for a chance to reach the NBA Finals. If healthy, and playing in cohesion, this team has everything it takes to do just that.
