John Cena made a triumphant return to WWE at Money in the Bank 2021. The sixteen-time world champion confronted Roman Reigns, eventually feuding with him. During the leadup to their match at SummerSlam, Cena had an intriguing interaction with Reigns’ special counsel, Paul Heyman, on an episode of SmackDown. This ended with Heyman singing and mocking Cena’s theme song before heading to the back.
Recently, the WWE Hall of Famer, while speaking on the Impaulsive podcast, detailed how Cena reacted to the retort both before and after the promo. Prior to going out, Heyman tried to apprise the legend about his unusual antics. However, Cena wanted to act naturally to it and asked Heyman to surprise him during their promo. Following their segment, Heyman revealed Cena “laughed his a** off” backstage.
Both Heyman and Cena are widely regarded among the greatest talkers in wrestling history. In fact, this wasn’t the first time that these two interacted on WWE programming. The two had several back-and-forths during The Franchise Player’s rivalry with another Paul Heyman Guy, Brock Lesnar.
As for his feud with Reigns, it ended with The Tribal Chief successfully retaining the Universal Championship against John Cena at SummerSlam. For many, this marked a “passing of the torch” moment as Reigns’ status was finally solidified.
This also marked the last time Cena and Reigns met inside the squared circle. However, fans might witness the two behemoths battle it out again soon. Over the past couple of weeks, both Cena and Reigns declared themselves for the Royal Rumble match. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what transpires in the 30-man match on February 1.
CM Punk responded to John Cena’s Royal Rumble announcement on Raw
On the Raw Netflix premiere, John Cena kickstarted his retirement tour. Cena made his intentions clear: he wants to become a seventeen-time world champion in his final year as a professional wrestler. And his first step toward that goal was winning the Royal Rumble. As such, the legend announced that he would be entering the 30-man match.
This promo caught the attention of several superstars, including Cena’s iconic rival, CM Punk. On the latest episode of Raw, The Second City Saint laid out his own ambitions. Punk vowed to accomplish two career firsts in the coming months. First, Punk wanted to win the Royal Rumble match after coming close last year against Cody Rhodes.
After winning the 30-man bout, Punk would be one step closer to accomplishing a lifelong dream. The Straight Edge Superstar would be able to finally headline WrestleMania in a championship match. With half a dozen top stars confirming their participation, this time’s Rumble promises to be one of the most competitive in recent history.
