Conor McGregor is embroiled in another feud, and this time, with one of his fellow countrymen. Ireland’s Paul Hughes shone in his bout with Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov last Saturday. After the Champions Series: Road to Dubai (Series 6) event, the young Hughes now gets the “Notorious” treatment.
Heading into fight week, the PFL title bout was still on-brand with its Dagestan vs. Ireland 2 branding. A mob skirmish even broke out between fans during final staredowns. It looked like Hughes was going all-in “Conor McGregor.” But later, McGregor caught learned his comments, “I’m not like this other guy. I’m my own man…”, to Team Khabib. The Irish UFC superstar hated him for it, and Hughes has replied.
Nurmagomedov defeated Paul Hughes via majority decision (47-47, 48-46, 48-46) in a gritty all-out battle at Champions Series: Road to Dubai. A clear FOTY contender, it attracted praise on Hughes’ performance to hang with the champ.
Conor McGregor even touted him as the clear winner and called robbery in his tweet sprees. That all switched up fast enough seeing the post-fight comments from the bout captured by Anatomy of a Fighter. Hughes and his camaraderie with McGregor-rival Khabib Nurmagomedov set him off big time.
On January 23, Hughes even thanked Conor McGregor big time for coming full circle moment and getting a title crack. But the UFC superstar made crass attacks referring to Hughes being from Northern Ireland. McGregor later deleted these comments, along with a number of others.
McGregor’s contentious relationship with the Nurmagomedov family is unlikely to help matters. Later on Wednesday, Khabib took to socials to back Hughes up, and post a pointed diss at McGregor.
Khabib Nurmagomedov backs Paul Hughes in feud vs. Conor McGregor
“The Eagle” has zero patience for longtime UFC rival Conor McGregor. Nurmagomedov cornered cousin Usman Nurmagomedov at Champions Series: Road to Dubai. In the aftermath, Khabib even lauded Hughes and buried the hatchet with Irish MMA.
Paul Hughes even accepted a chance to visit and train in Dagestan, given he’d have another crack at the lightweight title strap. McGregor turned on “Big News” Hughes after seeing footage of Hughes apparently insulting him in a post-fight chat with Khabib. Hughes coolly brushed off McGregor’s comments, and now Khabib has chimed in with a far less tactful response.
The duo have a long history and faced each other in the UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor PPV spectacle. The Irishman keeps on his track of diss even today. It’s what bolstered PFL’s Dagestan vs. Ireland 2 labels on this particular fight.
McGregor is likely to respond on social media, even though he hasn’t fought much in recent years. “Mystic Mac” isn’t back since his 2021 TKO injury loss to Dustin Poirier. But tell that to him, who proactively takes on to dissing Team Khabib like he fought them just this month!
