NBA analysts are often known for their bold and sometimes bizarre takes on players, coaches, and league matters. Names like Stephen A. Smith, Kendrick Perkins, and Jason Whitlock frequently stir controversy with their opinions. This time, however, it was former NBA star Paul Pierce who grabbed the spotlight.
The former Boston Celtics player stunned the NBA community with his recent take on the latest segment of the FS1 show SPEAK. When people start mentioning the names of the greatest pure shooters in history, the 47-year-old retired hero, known as “The Truth,” feels as though he is being ignored. Pierce claimed that he is the best pure shooter in NBA history.
I was probably the best pure scorer ever in the history of the game. I was pretty equipped when I think about it. I need to be in this conversation.
Paul Pierce said
For context, following Lebron James‘ release of the ‘Mind the Game’ podcast episode, including Kevin Durant‘s presence, they both recently went viral. James referred to Durant as possibly the “most equipped” scorer in NBA history at the start of the show. This led to Pierce making those astronomical remarks about himself.

Pierce’s remarks put him ahead of the likes of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, James, and Durant. Following Pierce’s TV assertion, social media was inundated with a number of these responses. The fact that Pierce felt this strongly about his skills was unbelievable to his admirers.
On the other hand, James has played against both Durant and Pierce in his career. That said, if the King claims Durant is the most equipped player in NBA shooting history, his take would hold more weight. To add to this, Pierce never won the NBA scoring title. Meanwhile, Durant has four of them (2010-12, 2014), making things clear between the two.
Fans did not waste time to throw shade on Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce went toe-to-toe with NBA’s greatest players with his statement (as mentioned above). Calling himself as the greatest pure shooter in NBA history when players like Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant exist is diabolical, at least that’s what the fans think.
Many of them did not waste any time to throw shade on Pierce and his remarks on the FS1 show. Not even a single fan on any social media platform backed his game, and even if they did, it had a touch of sarcasm in it. One fan wrote on X, “He’s not even a top 50 scorer of all time.” Check out some of the fan reactions below:

With four shooting titles, Durant is tied for third place in all-time scoring crowns, behind Wilt Chamberlain (7) and Jordan (10). The only two players with as many scoring crowns as Durant are George Gervin and Allen Iverson. So where is Paul Pierce in all of this? The numbers don’t lie and fans know it, leaving Peirce red-faced in the process.
Paul Peirce left annoyed with the Celtics’ offseason trade business
The Boston Celtics made some surprising trade decisions regarding their 2024 NBA title winning roster. They decided to trade Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to the Portland Trail Blazers and Atlanta Hawks, respectively. This did not sit well with many, including former NBA players, Paul Peirce and Kevin Garnett. So much so that Pierce, also a former Celtic, spoke his mind on this matter.
You don’t like it, because you looked at it when they won last year, you’re like, ‘Man, this team could be a dynasty,’ they were all relatively young. They had already been through their growing pains. You start to understand the business of it now, because it’s new ownership.
Paul Pierce said on The Ticket & Truth podcast
However, it if was up to the Celtics’ management based on sporting decisions alone, they might have not traded those two stars. Getting under the second apron and potentially avoiding luxury tax penalties entirely is the Celtics’ clear offseason goal. Hence, they had to get rid of their star players to avoid any hassle from the league in general.
