Dwyane Wade’s statue gets mocked by Paul Pierce

In fulfilling their promise, the Miami Heat honored legend Dwyane Wade with a statue outside the Kaseya Center, as they recognized his contributions to the team. Wade, who is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, was a key member of the Heat’s three NBA championship teams.

However, it didn’t all go as planned as the unveiling of the statue was met with a lukewarm reception. Even longtime rival Paul Pierce chimed in, as he tweeted his message to former teammate, Tony Allen, who he thought the statue resembled.

Wade’s own reaction was awkward, and the internet quickly mocked the statue’s likeness. Despite the brutal nature of the trolling, D-Wade himself gave his own assessment of the statue, calling it ‘one of the best ever created’.

The statue is part of a larger tribute to Dwyane Wade, who had his number retired by the Heat and is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. Furthermore, an in-game celebration will follow on Monday, which will mark the 21st anniversary of Wade’s debut game.

Dwyane Wade statue sparks criticism from Bill Simmons

Paul Pierce was never going to be the only popular person to call out the statue dedicated in honor of D-Wade. Joining the movement was Bill Simmons of The Ringer, who joked that the statue resembled a burn victim.

The biggest loser of the day was Dwyane Wade, who had the worst statue of all time. I actually thought looked like somebody who had emerged from a fire and lived. What that Jim Carey fireman sketch. Can you imagine having a statue look that bad of yourself? … There’s never been a worst statue and it got rightfully killed.

Simmons sarcastically remarked that it would take him about “700 guesses” to identify the statue as Wade. This won’t be the first time an athlete is getting such criticism, as soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo was once on the receiving end.

Despite the controversy, Wade’s legacy remains untouched. He is widely regarded as the greatest player in Miami Heat history, as he famously led the team to three NBA titles, including their first in 2006 where he was named Finals MVP. He now joins an elite group of NBA legends with statues outside their respective arenas which include Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal.
