A year after winning the National League Rookie of the Year award, Paul Skenes is now the National League Cy Young Award winner. The Pittsburgh Pirates ace took home this crown unanimously as he received 30 first-place votes. His girlfriend, Olivia Dunne, dropped a 9-word reaction to this.

Skenes was once again one of the shining lights in a dark season for the Pirates. The NL Central side finished bottom of their standings with a 71-91 record. Their record was only better than the Minnesota Twins, the Washington Nationals, the Chicago White Sox and the Colorado Rockies.

Despite dominating performances from Skenes from the mound, the Pirates would end up dropping several games as they failed to give him run support. The 23-year-old went 10-10 for the season in his 32 starts.

With one complete game under his belt, the Pirates’ ace finished with a 1.97 ERA for the season, the lowest among any pitcher in the league. He also picked up 216 strikeouts, the joint 2nd most in the National League, along with Jesus Luzardo of the Philadelphia Phillies.

These performances made him a clear favorite for the NL Cy Young Award crown. On Wednesday, it was revealed that he received all 30 first-place votes and was thus crowned the unanimous winner of this award.

Following his historic triumph, his girlfriend, Olivia Dunne, hyped him up. The gymnast dropped a fierce 9-word reaction towards her partner’s victory on X.

This year, Skenes even had a good reaction to winning the Cy Young Award crown. After winning the NL Rookie of the Year in 2024, he would go viral on social media for his deadpan reaction. Over the course of the year, there were several jokes made regarding it. This time, Skenes made sure to smile when his name was announced.

Skenes is now the third Pirates’ star to claim this achievement, joining Vern Law (1960) and Doug Drabek (1990). He is the first among them to win this award unanimously. He is also the first unanimous NL Cy Young Award winner since Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins in 2022.

During the recent GM Meetings in Las Vegas, Pirates GM Ben Cherington clarified the team’s intention of keeping him in the 2026 season. Just hours before his NL Cy Young Award win, a report from insider Randy Miller shocked the world.

As per the report from NJ Advance Media, an anonymous Pirates player claimed that Skenes wants to play for the Yankees and has “no confidence” in the Pirates ever winning something.

Trust me, he wants to play for the Yankees. I’ve heard him say it multiple times.

The anonymous player said as per Randy Miller

In a Zoom meeting via 93.7 The Fan, Skenes claimed he had no idea where that came from and expressed that he wants to win in Pittsburgh.

I got shown the Tweet and really didn’t think anything of it. I got some texts about it. I’m on the Pirates, my goal is to win with the Pirates. I love the city of Pittsburgh. I don’t know where that came from, the goal is to win. I don’t know the reporter that reported it. I don’t know the player who supposedly said that, but the goal is to win and the goal is to win in Pittsburgh.

For Skenes to win in Pittsburgh, the team will need to make some changes. The Pirates have not played in the playoffs since 2015 and are 147-177 in Skenes’ first two seasons. The team has also not finished with a winning record since 2018, when they went 82-79 and finished fourth in the NL Central standings.
