Paula Badosa got the better of Marta Kostyuk in the third round of the Australian Open. The match, played inside the Show Court Arena on Friday (January 17), saw Badosa losing her cool during the second set and she engaged in an angry confrontation with her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas, which left the commentators in splits.

Badosa won the first set 6-4 but the windy condition made it difficult for the Spaniard to have the momentum on her side. She was down 0-4 in the second set and tried explaining to her team the problem she was facing.

Tsitsipas, who was sitting in the crowd, made some gesture, urging her to calm down. Badosa perhaps got more angry, and she picked up the racket, gesturing that he should come and play instead. The Greek ace only laughed at this suggestion.

He was sitting with the crowd and cheering for Paula Badosa during her second-round match against Talia Gibson. She took just 48 minutes to beat the Australian with scores of 6-1, 6-0, and later joked that she finished the match quickly because of Tsitsipas.

I think he always complains that I do long matches so today I was really proud of myself that he didn’t have to stay much. But it’s amazing to have him by my side, it’s very inspiring, especially for a player that is so good at what he does.

Paula Badosa said during her on-court interview

Badosa then asked the crowd inside the Margaret Court Arena to raise Tsitsipas’ spirit because of his disappointing campaign in Melbourne.

Guys, I want a round of applause for him because he’s not having the best moment, but he will come back.

Paula Badosa asked the crowd

Badosa and Tsitsipas began dating in May 2023, but a year later they broke up but got back together a few weeks later.

The 11th seed reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the second time. Last year, she crashed out of the tournament in the second round.
