Paulo Costa most likely to pull out from the fight against Robert Whittaker on April 17 UFC event
Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker
UFC Middleweight title contender, Paulo Costa has been reportedly called off from the main event fight of Fight Night on April 17. The Brazilian was originally scheduled to fight the former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker. The fight’s winner potentially was going to face current UFC Middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya.
Paulo was on an amazing winning streak up until his loss against Izzy at the middleweight title bout. The Brazilian has a record of 13-1-0 in the UFC and was looking to get back his revenge against Adesanya. Now that he has fallen short of the title shot fight against Whittaker he will have to wait to avenge his first loss.
Robert on the other hand has been looking to get back his title from Israel Adesanya. He escalated to the top of the 185-pound division with important wins against top fighters like Yoel Romero and Ronald Souza. The fighter lost his belt to ‘The Last Stylebender’ in 2019.
Multiple sources suggest that Costa has been dropped from the fight due to severe flu the fighter contracted. He is dealing with the flu and is unable to train fully for the important fight. The promotion has to decide if they are going to find a new opponent or reschedule the fight.
Will Robert Whittaker face a new opponent on April 17?
Now that the former middleweight champion is left with no opponent on April 17, UFC will either have to reschedule the fight card to May 1 or May 8. Or Whittaker will be fighting a new opponent on the already fixed date.
Whittaker has been in great form and the loss against Israel in 2019 hasn’t harmed his performance in the Octagon. Since his title fight defeat, the Kiwi has won against Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. The news about Paulo Costa was first reported by Ag.Fight on Monday.
