There is a thin line between being competitive and being plain disrespectful. Payton Turner of the New Orleans Saints was unable to differentiate between the two as he put his unsportsmanlike conduct on full display in the team’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

DeVonta Smith went down in the fourth quarter of the game hoping to score his first touchdown of the game. As he neared the endzone, he was hit by two Saints defenders and the first hit was direct to the head which led to his helmet flying off. It appeared to be deliberate and Smith collapsed on the field and lay motionless sending shivers down the spine of his teammates and fans watching.

At this point, defensive end Payton Turner got up and looked at a motionless DeVonta Smith then proceeded to spit right on him. His act was beyond disrespectful, it was outright disgusting.

The NFL is likely to penalize Payton Turner for his unsportsmanlike conduct

DeVonta Smith was confirmed to have sustained a concussion. It was evident right after the hit he took from Khristian Boyd and lay on the field. Fortunately, the wideout managed to get up and walk off into the locker room by himself.

The Philadelphia Eagles lost two of their players to concussions today. Apart from DeVonta Smith, right tackle Lane Johnson went down with a concussion in the first half of the game. He was replaced by Fred Johnson.

Payton Turner’s actions are likely to be reviewed by the NFL. The defensive end should face suspension for this behavior along with a fine. Social media reactions blasted Turner for kicking a man when he was down. The referees did not notice the defensive end’s actions in the moment as the immediate concern was DeVonta Smith’s wellbeing. Hopefully, the wide receiver gets back on his feet soon and can make a speedy recovery.
