The 2024-25 season has not been a good one so far for Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry. He has struggled for consistency in this campaign. On Wednesday, the franchise announced that he will be placed on waivers.

Jarry signed a five-year $26.8 million extension in 2023. The contract which will run till the 2027-28 season, sees him make around $5.3 million in salary.

In the 2024-25 season, Jarry is currently 8-8-4. During the recent game against the Seattle Kraken, the 29-year-old goalie gave up three goals on 17 shots he faced. The Penguins ended up losing that game 4-2 and now are 18-20-2 for the season.

In the 5-2 loss against the Tampa Bay Lighting, Jarry once again gave up three goals after 17 shots. As per reports from NHL.com, the goaltender did not participate in the team’s practice session on Wednesday.

Earlier this season, General Manager Kyle Dubas gave the players a stern warning. Dubas sent a memo to every other team in the league and claimed that the team was open to trading everyone except for club captain Sidney Crosby.

Speaking on the matter regarding Jarry, Dubas claimed that it was his job to make some decisions and rectify the mistakes.

In terms of how it reflects on me, I think this is the job; you have to make decisions… It was my decision (to sign Jarry) within the first couple weeks of being here. That was a decision then, I also would say, with goaltenders in particular, you have to be careful about writing the obituary too quickly… If there are mistakes that I make, I try to rectify them and come out here and face the music.

GM Kyle Dubas told the reporters

He will now be available for 24 hours for other teams to claim him. If no team picks up after 24 hours, he will be demoted to the Penguins’ AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Earlier this season, he was sent to them for conditional improving.

After the departure of Marc-Andre Fleury, Jarry was called up from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to serve as the backup goaltender to Matt Murray. He would later replace him and establish himself as the number-one goaltender for the Penguins.

As for the Penguins, they have lost the last three games on the bounce. They will now embark on a two-week road trip starting with a matchup against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.
