Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola disagreed with midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s assessment of the club’s disastrous 2-0 defeat to Juventus. The manager refuted Gundogan’s view that the team lacks ‘confidence’ and that they ‘overcomplicate’ things.

The Cityzens suffered their seventh defeat this season, against Juventus in the UCL, enduring their worst run under manager Pep Guardiola. The club has now won just one out of its last ten matches.

Following the defeat, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan shared an honest assessment, claiming that City have been trying to ‘over-complicate things’ in one-on-one duels. This, he added, led to the team losing possession and conceding goals from quick counterattacks. He also noted the team’s mentality, which has been impacted by the slump.

Gundogan’s comments, however, did not sit well with Guardiola, who hit back. Praising his team’s display, the Spaniard stated that his side did not lose possession as much against Juventus, like the previous matches. He highlighted how good Italian clubs are in terms of defending and that City laid out its best display. Moreover, Guardiola pointed out how his players were aggressive.

We have done it today, other days, no, but today we have done it, we have done it really well. We didn’t lose many balls. Italian teams defend so deep they are so compact… Even with that we played like who we are.

Owing to the club’s recent form, Guardiola finds his position at Manchester City in jeopardy, despite having most recently signed a two-year contract extension. The club would have to bounce back against city-rivals Manchester United in a much-awaited EPL encounter.

Pep Guardiola reveals ‘questioning’ himself following Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Juventus

The 53-year-old manager, who has otherwise remained one of Man City’s greatest mangers till date, recently revealed that he always questions himself after a match, whether they win or lose. Guardiola adds that he remains stable during both good and bad moments, suggesting that he tries to find ways to win from that.

Of course I question myself, in the good moments, in the bad moments. I was stable in the good moments, I was stable in the bad moments. I try to find the way, find win.

Manchester City are just a point above the UCL elimination places, with eight points from six matches. They would need to win against PSG and Club Brugge next, whom they face in consecutive Champions League encounters, to qualify for the knockouts.
