The debate to determine who is the greatest of all time between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is one that has been going on for years. The Argentine No. 10 and the legendary Portuguese No. 7 both have their own claims as to who deserves the title of being the ‘best’. However, Manchester City and former FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola only has one favorite—Messi.
Time and again, the Spaniard has named Messi as the best, with his superlatives reaching another high in a recent interview. Speaking about the greatness of the two, Guardiola drew a bizarre comparison. The City boss went so far as to even name Lionel Messi as the ‘father’ of his eternal rival!
The City manager gave his analogy while speaking of the duo’s unbelievable Ballon d’Or streak. 2024 is the first time neither Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo have made it to the final shortlist.

Even though this may point to the end of an era for the GOATs, the debate between the two is set to continue.
Pep Guardiola makes feelings clear on Real Madrid boycott of Ballon d’Or
No Real Madrid player, including club President Florentio Perez, attended the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris yesterday. It was revealed later that the club and its players stood in solidarity with Vinicius Jr., whom they thought was rightfully deserving of the award. Even though Manchester City and Spanish midfielder Rodri claimed the prize, fans were divided in their take.
In a recent interaction with the press, Pep Guardiola didn’t seem to be very pleased with Madrid’s decision to not attend the ceremony. He drew an example of how City man Erling Haaland missed out on the award last time as Lionel Messi claimed a record eighth Ballon d’Or. Haaland had an unbelievable season, complete with a treble-winning season and more than 50 goals scored.

“They want to go, it's fine, they don't, it's fine. They want to congratulate, it's fine, they don't, it's fine. We are not here to judge what other clubs decide what they have to do”, says Pep Guardiola. pic.twitter.com/vo8Z7Fuo8U
Guardiola stated that Haaland still attended the ceremony and even congratulated the winner in a subtle dig aimed at Madrid.
Rodri is the first Manchester City player ever to win the Ballon d’Or and is the first Spaniard to do so since 1960.
