Manchester City’s dominance in the Premier League is no secret. The Cityzens became the first side in history to win the League title four times in a row in the English top flight’s 136-year-old history. After a rather ‘rocky’ start to life in pre-season, City found their feet with a narrow win over rivals Manchester United on penalties in the Community Shield.
As City prepare to kick off yet another title defense against Enzo Maresca‘s Chelsea on Sunday, boss Pep Guardiola has revealed that he isn’t motivated to win it this year.
Now, the motivation to win the Premier is not there. For me, it’s not there. It will be in the last month.
Pep Guardiola said in a press conference via HaytersTV
Fans are accustomed to City’s tactics, where they start slow and eventually pick up pace as the season progresses. Despite being one of the most successful and dominant managers in the competition, Guardiola recently stated that his contribution to the sport in England has been ‘zero’.
Surprisingly, his justification was that he hadn’t scored or saved a ball in England. City will make the trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with the game set to kick off at 9:00 p.m. IST.
Pep Guardiola hints at Joao Cancelo return following bust up in the past
It is no secret that Joao Cancelo was loaned out to Bayern Munich and then FC Barcelona following the Portuguese’s disagreements with the Manchester City boss. Pep recently revealed that Cancelo has returned from Barcelona following his season-long loan deal and has joined City. The 30-year-old has rejoined training with City and is under contract at the club till 2027.
While speaking to the press, Guardiola hinted at his reintegration into the team and highlighted the possibility of him not leaving on loan again. The Spaniard specifically stated that Cancelo not leaving on loan for the 2024/25 campaign is something that ‘could happen’. It was reported that Guardiola was rather dissatisfied with the fact that Cancelo listened to music during one of his pre-match team talks a few seasons ago.
Guardiola has ‘successfully’ replaced Cancelo in the squad, having brought in 22-year-old Josko Gvardiol last season. Despite being a centre-back, Guardiola has ‘reinvented’ the youngster to operate out from the left if needed. It will be interesting to see how Guardiola will end up using Cancelo if the experienced full-back ends up staying at the Etihad.
