The English Football Association (FA) is reportedly considering the appointment of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, as the new Three Lions head coach. He would replace the outgoing English manager Gareth Southgate, ending his eight-year stint.
Gareth Southgate resigned on Tuesday, just two days after the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, triggering a long-prepared FA plan for his departure. The FA is reportedly considering approaching Pep Guardiola and might wait until the end of the 2024-25 season when his contract with Manchester City expires. The former Barcelona manager has hinted that he might leave the club once his contract is up.
In case the FA decides to wait until for Guardiola, they would have to appoint an interim manager for England for the upcoming year. Current England U-21 manager Lee Carsley is one of the front-runners for the role.
Guardiola is arguably the most successful manager of the recent era. At 53, he has won the Premier League six times, guiding Manchester City to the title in each of the past five years. Additionally, he has won the UCL three times, with Barcelona and City.

It would be intriguing to see the former Bayern manager transition to international management in the future. Besides Guardiola, the list of potential candidates includes Jurgen Klopp, Eddie Howe, and Brendan Rodgers.
Pep Guardiola yet to make a decision on his Manchester City future
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has delayed his decision on his future with the club, and is expected to share his decision with the board by the end of the year. His contract with the Citizens extends until 2025, and there have been no discussions about an extension.
Guardiola’s tenure at City began in June 2016, following a move from Bundesliga side Bayern Munich. The club wants Guardiola to extend his current contract, but respects his need for time to decide. Initially, his three-year deal was believed to be his last, but he extended it in May 2018 until 2021 and again in November 2020 until 2023. He then extended it one final time until 2025.
As one of the league’s most successful managers, he might consider taking a break from football, similar to his former Liverpool counterpart, Jurgen Klopp.
