Cristiano Ronaldo penned an emotional message on social media as former Real Madrid and Portugal teammate Pepe announced his retirement.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe have led Portugal at numerous international tournaments. From the iconic win against France in 2016 to the Nations League triumph in 2019, the duo have been the best in the business for their country for the greater part of two decades. As 41-year-old Pepe announced his retirement from professional football, his teammate and friend Ronaldo couldn’t refrain from penning an emotional farewell message.
Shortly after the center-back called time on his career, Ronaldo took to social media, as he recounted the iconic moments shared between them. It is interesting to note that the two share 15 trophies between themselves, with the most recent being the Nations League win in 2019.

The superstar also wrote that they won ‘everything’ there was to win in the sport. As Pepe‘s career came to a close, fans recalled how the duo shared an emotional moment as Portugal were knocked out by France in the quarterfinal at the Euros in Germany.

Simply said, Pepe had one of the most emotional and beautiful retirement announcements in recent times. The center-back was seen reminiscing important moments throughout his career as a clip with Cristiano Ronaldo popped up.
The video featured an emotional moment in the player’s last ever game for the national team. Pepe was seen embracing the Portugal captain as he buried his face in Ronaldo’s shoulder. “Thankyou for everything brother,” said Pepe as he broke down in tears after the elimination against France earlier this year.
Pepe made his senior professional debut for CS Maritimo B back in 2001 before being promoted to the first-team. He has also played for Porto, Real Madrid and Besiktas before returning to Porto to conclude his chapter. As the footballing community says goodbye to yet another legend, fans can rest assured that he will forever be an icon.
