In Monday’s press conference, Pete Alonso talked about the “exhausting” free agency saga that ended in the 2-year $54 million deal with the New York Mets. The process was tiring for both parties as they failed to find a middle ground in negotiations.
Fortunately for the Mets fans, they get to see Alonso tied up with the organization for another two years and maybe even longer. He is one of the longest-tenured Mets players and undoubtedly one of the faces of the organization.
When asked if the free agency was taxing at some point, Pete Alonso jokingly replied, “Not for me.” It might have been for agent Scott Boras and Mets owner Steve Cohen but not for him.
Alonso even had two words to offer to Cohen, “Sorry Steve” he said. Even Cohen joked about how he might have needed to check Boras’ pulse after they finalized the deal.
[We] had a great conversation over a few hours, & frankly Pete did all the talking. Scott Boras was there & Scott didn’t say a freaking word the whole time.

At one point the NY Mets even decided to move on from Alonso and look for other options as no deal was taking place for a while. Earlier, Pete Alonso rejected the team’s $158 million extension which might have been a game-changer for him.
However, the first baseman noted that he does not regret his past actions as he bets on himself to set the standard every season. In 2024 he recorded .240/.329/.459 with 34 HRs.
Juan Soto excited to play with Pete Alonso as teammates
During the New York Mets press conference, Juan Soto expressed that Pete Alonso was one of the players he was most excited to play with. The team’s biggest move in the offseason was to land Soto with a 15-year $765 million contract and now with Alonso back in the lineup, it’ll be a season worth waiting for.

Soto noted that Alonso is undoubtedly “one of the best pure power hitters in the league.” As Alonso said he’s extremely happy to be back with the Mets for the next couple of seasons. He reiterated the word “happy” 11 times during the press conference.
I think that the most fulfilling part is just the story continuing.
