Sunday Citi Field Stadium celebrated Pete Alonso’s possible final game for the 2024 season, as the baseman is scheduled to head into the trade deadline soon. The crowd of 40k+ shouted and showed off-hand signs such as “POLAR BEAR PLEASE STAY” and “SAVE THE POLAR BEAR” throughout the game.
The team’s 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Phillies further added to the celebration as they aim to participate in the playoff race. When asked what Pete Alonso and manager Carlos Mendoza thought of the trade deadline and possibly the last game, both were positive to not let it end with a farewell.
Alonso said “we’ve come so far” and the New York Mets plan to play further in 2024. The same sentiment was shared by Mendoza who promptly said,
It’s not gonna be his last game here. We’re planning on playing more games here this year.Carlos Mendoza on X.
Carlos Mendoza was asked about the reception he expects for Pete Alonso tomorrow, in what could be his final game as a Met at Citi Field.

He further thanked the fans for honoring him with a standing ovation, “It’s wild. It’s something you…kind of hear about or read about or kind of see in movies.” He tipped his helmet and then tapped it to his heart after the umpire gave him time to convey his feelings toward the NY fan base.

Alonso said that he truly feels blessed to be part of this organization, calling NY his home in an earlier interview. Sunday’s vigor to him was something “right out of a storybook for me.” Everyone is hoping to see Alonso extend his tenure with the team, but no final decision has been made yet.

NY Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo highly praised his teammates after the team won 2-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. He talked about how the team is trying its best to clinch a spot in the postseason by creating a playoff aura every night against their rivals.
Even manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday set the ambiance for a “playoff atmosphere.” “Hats off to our fanbase,” he noted, thanking them for cheering and supporting the team all the way through.
It’s been unbelievable. I’m so proud of these guys. They are fighting every pitch. This is playoff atmosphere, playoff baseball…These guys are just rising to the challenge…I’m very, very proud of these guys.Brandon Nimmo as per Colin Martin of SNY.

The Mets will be playing against the Atlanta Braves and are currently two games in the wild-card standings. The playoffs will be within reach with a series win, and the Mets plan to do that exactly. Even Alonso is currently focused on making it into the playoffs; the trade deadline rumors will be addressed later.
