The New York Mets and 1B Pete Alonso may close a deal as soon as today or tomorrow as per insider Boomer Esiason. The Alonso free agency saga has been carrying on all throughout the offseason and he still remains as one of the top players available in free agency.

Alonso came into the offseason following a strong 2024 performance and was one of the top candidates in free agency. However, with Spring Training starting in a few weeks, the 4x All-Star still remains unsigned.

According to Jon Heyman, Pete Alonsodesperately” wants to go back to Queens and has talked to his agent Scott Boras to make it happen. Only a couple of weeks ago, Mets owner Steve Cohen talked about how “exhausting” the free agency has been, especially with Alonso’s deal pending.

They were even willing to look at other options as Alonso rejected their 3-year $70 million option. Furthermore, after their historical 15-year $765 million signing of superstar Juan Soto, the team has been considering offering high-end deals to other free agents.

However, with Alonso showing interest in returning to the Mets, Steve Cohen has started discussions again with the front office. Apart from the Mets, the Toronto Blue Jays are the 2nd best competitor for the baseman’s services.

The choice is his, but the ending to this saga always seemed like it was painted in orange and blue. It’s time for Alonso to accept that his destiny is calling him back to Queens.

After adding Max Scherzer to the lineup, Alonso would provide a solid backing for the team. Although it remains to see if the player will consider moving to Toronto vs. NY where he has played all his MLB career till now.

Jerry Blevins believes it’ll be ‘little awkward’ if Pete Alonso returns to Mets

New York Mets pitcher Jerry Blevins talked about what it would be like for the team to welcome back Pete Alonso after the free agency drama. He bluntly stated that it may be a bit awkward at the start of the Spring Training but things should settle down later down the line.

Blevins believes that Alonso’s ego and superstar outfielder Juan Soto’s addition won’t be a good match for the locker room. While they will openly welcome Alonso back, there might be tension in the clubhouse.

There’s potential for it to be a little awkward if the Mets re-sign him, it will be with open arms, but the first few days in spring training might be a little strange.

Blevins further added how Alonso has been a Mets all his career and is one of the “superstar” of the franchise. However, with the mix of players like Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and now Juan Soto things might get tricky.
