The New York Mets finally won a game on Sunday. The National League East side snapped an 8-game losing run following a walk-off home run in extra innings from Pete Alonso. After the game, the first baseman sent a message to the fans while expressing his gratitude towards them.
Following a hot start and having the best record in the league at one stage at 45-24, the Mets suffered a massive slump. They lost their lead at the top of the standings and lost track of their rivals.
They entered the game on Sunday on an 8-game losing streak. Things just have not worked out for the Mets in recent weeks, which left them in a poor state.
After another positive start from Nolan McLean, the team’s bullpen lost control. They would let the slim lead they had over the Texas Rangers slip out of their hands. After Edwin Diaz worked out a jam in the ninth inning, Ryne Stanek threw a scoreless 10th inning to keep the game leveled at 2-2.
Alonso, who was 0-for-3 in the game, would step up to bat in the bottom of the 10th inning. The ‘Polar Bear‘ connected on a 96 mph fastball from Luis Curvelo and smashed the ball to deep right-center field. The 3-run bomb from him led the Mets to a 5-2 win and snapped their long losing run.

Following the game, Alonso would send a powerful message to the Mets fans. While thanking them for their support, the 5-time MLB All-Star claimed that the year is not over yet.
I felt like I was surfing on top of a dragon there, and that was sick. Oh, thank you guys so much for coming out. Keep on supporting us, guys. This year ain’t over. Keep supporting us. Keep backing us. We’re going to keep playing really hard for you guys and really appreciate your own unwavering support. You guys are the best. Thank you.

It was Alonso’s 34th home run of the year and his first in 11 games. It was also his 5th career walk-off homer.
Carlos Mendoza admits Pete Alonso’s walk-off home run was something NY Mets needed
The New York Mets finally ended a barren run of results. A walk-off home run from Pete Alonso helped the team win for the first time in 9 games. His manager, Carlos Mendoza, later admitted that this was something that the team really needed.

The way the Mets were losing games, they needed something special. Alonso produced that moment in the 10th inning with his walk-off home run.
While speaking with the reporters during the press conference, Mendoza expressed that it was an important moment for the team.
It was important. I’m not gonna lie, we needed that one.
Carlos Mendoza said as per SNY
"Not going to lie, we needed that one."

This win also saw the Mets avoid getting swept by the Rangers. While the Philadelphia Phillies later won and clinched the division, the Mets are still in the race for the playoffs.
With a 77-73 record, the New York side holds a slim lead for the final wild card spot in the National League. They are 1.5 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants in this standings. The Giants, who won the first game of the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, suffered back-to-back defeats on Saturday and Sunday, leading to some relief for the Mets.
Pete Alonso and his teammates will now set their sights on the San Diego Padres. The NL West team is 2.5 games behind the Dodgers in the division race. After the Padres series, the Mets will face the Washington Nationals, the Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins.
